Re: installing tar.gz software
Nearly every tar.gz file has a readme file within it with instructions on how to install the software contained therein. Some may need to be compiled, some installed with the gdebi or dpkg installers, or some (such as Firefox) simply placed in a folder and run. Usually you just need to right-click the file and select "extract here" and it will un-tar so that you have access to the files within. If you left-click the tar.gz file it will usually open a window showing you what is in it, and you will be able to read the readme file from there.

Re: installing tar.gz software
The real question is what are you trying to install from a tar.gz file anyway? Although necessary sometimes, the vast majority of applications are available via the repositories or packaged in a .deb format already.JackTilley wrote:still cant do this

Re: installing tar.gz software
Here's a basic guide, that may at least point you in a general direction. Hope you're enjoying Linux! It's great.
Re: installing tar.gz software
remoulder. well i am trying to download a driver for a canon printer and the fill is tar.gz
Re: installing tar.gz software
No problem, unfortunately that's certainly one of the (few?) times you might need to use that file format to install. Good luckJackTilley wrote:driver for a canon printer and the fill is tar.gz
