how to clone, create an entire "image" of hard drive[solved]

Post by gatorade »

I was reading a thread on another board about cloning a hard drive using Acronis True Image. The person wanted to upgrade to a larger HD and another guy suggested Acronis to clone the hard drive, and then copy the image back to the newer larger drive.

Does anyone have any experience doing this?
I was wondering what kinds of tools Linux has available for this type of operation. If you have link to a good tutorial as well that would be great. I'm not in need of this right now , but I'm sure it will come in handy one day so I'd like to read up a bit on it.

When I was on my junior high, I've been using Norton Ghost to do such a task. So I googled "Norton Ghost Alternate" and the result was

http://alternativeto.net/software/norton-ghost/
http://clonezilla.org/
http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/H ... x-53.shtml

I think if we eager to read, the software was quite easy to use..

Try using Clonzilla. It should do the job nicely.

You might also look at PING (Partimage Is Not Ghost):

There are fortunately several fine alternatives out there.

Some things to look out for. Always take a reliable backup prior to act... B-)
(Whoops I have to do one right now... B-) )

+1 to CloneZilla. Espetially for DRBL. It is the GUI-Multicast-live-server-universal-tool version of clonezilla.

Anyhow CloneZilla uses already present tools in a framework.
The first\best there were partimage. The same developer then rounded it in a live-cd: sysresccd.org you can find there.

Also worth a mention (albeit I am not tested it out yet) an other distro what you can find on the Ultimate Boot CD ( ubcd.sf.net) It is the "Parted Magic". They started to develop their own util becouse they did not liked that clonezilla uses 'bloatware' as their 'framework' and requirements. B-)

There are always issues and new technologies. I am going to find out now with mint11 that the new UID in fstab is an issue for the cloning or not.

And of course - there are the distro-inbuilt technologies.
