<SOLVED> Dual boot XP/Lisa on seperate HD

Post by marsh20 » Wed Jan 04, 2012 6:04 am

I have XP on primary HD and Lisa on second HD. When I run them both only XP boots with no boot menu. EasyBCD is recommended on various forums. Which HD should I load it to? I'm guessing the primary or is there a better/simpler way? Can this process be undone? I'm very new to the world of Linux (Mint) Thanks

I would guess you need to go into the computer Bios and make the Mint drive the Primary drive.
The grub "boot menu" probably got installed on the second drive and once you point the bios to boot
from that drive it should give you the dual boot choices.

Hi all, I have swapped HDs to make Lisa primary and XP secondary but then only Lisa booted. Any other suggestions? EasyBCD or tinkering with GRUB maybe?

I think this should do it...

Open terminal and type

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub

When you hit enter it will ask for your password ( it won't show what your typing. Just type it and hit enter :) )
Then reboot

Many thanks, Should I have XP or Lisa as primary? If I have XP as Primary will that be the default? (which is what I want)

Keep Lisa as primary drive so it will use the Grub.
It will probably default to Lisa as the default boot but I'm sure there is a way to change the default.
I just don't know it right off. There used to be a Startup Manager in older versions but I don't think 12 has it anymore.
I'll check how to change the default OS and get back to you...

Edit:
I found this

Scroll a little past half way down the page to

3c. Manage grub settings with Grub Customizer

All,
I followed the suggested instructions, no go I'm afraid.

I think my problem stems from loading Lisa onto a blank HHD whilst the XP HHD was disconnected. Currently whichever disk is primary, that one boots.

I'm going to re-format the Lisa HHD (Question FAT32?) and re-install Lisa (from live USB) with XP HDD connected (Question does it matter at this stage which is primary?

I want XP to be the default OS.

I was really hoping someone else would also offer some help and/or suggestions , but since no one else has here is my advice...
Make very sure you are installing to the right drive so you don't mess up XP !!!
This is all assuming you are reinstalling Mint 12.
First make your Linux drive the Primary drive.
Boot the live CD.
First thing when you boot the install disk click on the Menu button.
Then click Other then Gparted.
There you can view the hard drives. Hopefully the Linux will be on sda
If you click the little box at the top it should have sda and sdb
The XP disk will be formated NTFS and the Linux should have Ext4 and Swap.
If it's sda with linux (ext4) on it just make sure to use that one to reinstall Mint 12 !
Once you look at the drives don't do anything just X the window and start the install.

After you click continue 2 times it will ask for "Installation Type" Choose "Erase disk and install Linux Mint"
Some will tell you a bunch of stuff about other partitions and folders but the easyest is just to take defaults.
When you click continue it should say something about (sda) That should be your primary drive.
If it's the Linux drive it should say at the bottom "2 partitions will be deleted"
Just to make sure it's the correct click on the "advanced partitioning tool"
There it should say something like sda1 (ext4) and sda2 (Linux Swap)"
The boot loader should go on the same drive as Linux ! Not on the XP drive...
If it looks right just click "Install Now"

Usually if you just take the defaults it will be much simpler and easyer.
In my opinion it is much better to have 2 different drives like you have. Much less chance of borking your Windows install.
By the way Mint 12 uses Ext4 file system and not fat32...

Good luck and PLEASE make sure not to install on the XP drive

Please just worry about getting the Dual boot working first then later you can figure out how to make
Xp as the default OS.

Edit:
The installer might say "Install Alongside ---- " and/or " Replace Linux Mint ----- "
In your case I would pick the Replace option.
