Same problem on my rig with mint12 and the recommended AMD/ATI driver. I can install the driver but not the post-release version because it errors. After installing the driver my fonts are all garbled.

I tried the latest driver package from ATI and that results in desktop flashing/glitching, random teardropping on menus and dialogue popups, and for whatever reason I think it's making my front panel audio output not work.

I've read in countless places that the ATI drivers and gnome3 do not get along, but I'm a noob so that doesn't really mean much to me.

I have the same problem. It seems this is a known bug. I'd like to get confirmation from someone.
As soon as I install the additional drivers I get the dreaded rainbow on top and garbled text.
I'd also like to know if there is any performance loss by not using the proprietary drivers.
Do we really need to use these drivers? Should I try Mint 11? I love this distro btw.... :D

You can try deactivated ATI proprietary driver in additional driver. If you are booting with Live CD/DVD and didn't see color/image corruption , that mean your VGA card works with open source driver. You can check with "inxi -Gx" version of GLX renderer . LM12 is Gnome 3 transition and Gnome3 is new , we can expect better hardware support in future ( both open source and proprietary drivers) :) But i thought open source driver have a less compatibility problem for now.

You can read about open source radeon at :
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon#FOSS_drivers

about performance between open source and proprietary driver you can read :

Installation ATI driver in Ubuntu oneiric ( LM12 based on oneiric ) :

Thank you so much for your helpful response. :D
I can't wait proprietary drivers to work. The difference in performance is huge but
I"ll play Minecraft in windoz till things get sorted
I have no problem with the open source driver for daily low intensity surfing and such.
I may try Mint 11 just out of curiosity.
Thanks again!
