VLC 2.0 Update?

Post by I2k4 »

New to Mint, I'm interested in how, when to expect the upgrade to VLC 2.0 to appear in the Software repositories - it's my go to media player and the new version looks good.

TRUST BUT VERIFY any advice from anybody, including me. Mint/Ubuntu user since 10.04 LTS. LM20 64 bit XFCE (Dell 1520). Dual boot LM20 XFCE / Win7 (Lenovo desktop and Acer netbook). Testing LM21.1 Cinnamon and XFCE Live for new Lenovo desktop.

The VLC project has a PPA repository for that. Go here: https://launchpad.net/~videolan/+archive/stable-daily and follow the instructions to add the PPA to your sources, then do sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade.

Can someone verify if the PPA is dead or just down?

Disregard. I looked again and saw updates from today. Maybe just too much traffic right now?

if you can't wait for it to hit the repositories you can get it from here.

http://www.muktware.com/articles/3322/h ... linux-mint mentions a different PPA.

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:n-muench/vlc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc

I'm on Linux Mint 11, also, and would like to update to VLC 2.0. I posted on http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 08#p546008, but the advice I received led to a lot of broken dependencies.

VLC 2.1.0 on Mint 11 is a go!

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/master-daily
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Hmm. Still got the same dependency issues.

Did you try to install the version for Mint 12 / Oneiric prior to this? If so, you may want to go back to a working version first before upgrading. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 01#p546354

Yeah, tried that a number of times. It's just not gonna happen here.

I've verified my commands on both of my Mint 11 systems.

Your sources must still be screwed up. Post your /etc/apt/sources.list and we might be able to help.

Here's what I'm using. I remove the VLC PPAs that don't work with Y PPA Manager. I only have two PPAs installed ATM.

@d00med
I notice you have both the Katya and the Lisa repos active. If you are on 11 then start by commenting out the Lisa repo.

Yep. I'd remove

Thanks very much for the help. I tried removing the source, but still get the same list of dependency errors.

Code: Select all

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 vlc : Depends: vlc-nox (= 2.1.0~~git20120226+r1254-0~r69~oneiric1) but it is not going to be installed
       Depends: libavcodec53 (>= 4:0.7-1) but it is not installable or
                libavcodec-extra-53 (>= 4:0.7-1) but it is not installable
       Depends: libstdc++6 (>= 4.6) but 4.5.2-8ubuntu4 is to be installed
       Depends: libtar0 but it is not installable
       Depends: libva-x11-1 (> 1.0.12~) but 1.0.8-3 is to be installed
       Depends: libva1 (> 1.0.12~) but 1.0.8-3 is to be installed
       Depends: libxcb-keysyms1 (>= 0.3.8) but 0.3.6-1build1 is to be installed
       Recommends: vlc-plugin-notify (= 2.1.0~~git20120226+r1254-0~r69~oneiric1) but it is not going to be installed
       Recommends: vlc-plugin-pulse (= 2.1.0~~git20120226+r1254-0~r69~oneiric1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages
It's beyond me, and I'll probably have to eventually get around to upgrading my Mint install. :)

Okay, got your sources cleared up. Let's look at your PPAs.

Code: Select all

ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d > list && gedit list
Copy and paste from there.

Re: VLC 2.0 Update?

You need to remove all the PPAs with oneiric. That's what's causing your dependency issues.

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/videolan-master-daily-oneiric.list.save
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/videolan-stable-daily-oneiric.list.save
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/webupd8team-y-ppa-manager-oneiric.list
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/webupd8team-y-ppa-manager-oneiric.list.save
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ferramroberto-vlc-oneiric.list.save
sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/lucid-bleed-ppa-oneiric.list.save
sudo apt-get remove vlc
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/master-daily
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
That should remove all the erroneous ocelot stuff, clear out any of the stuff you may still have, add the PPA for the proper version and install it.

Update - it was early and I missed 2 of the other oneiric PPAs. I've edited the post with Tapatalk but that may ruin the code tag. If it did, I'll fix it around noon when I can get to a desktop.

I did find another eoneric entry and removed it, along with the rest, removed all VLC packages, reinstalled VLC to a working 1.1.9, added the videolan/master-daily PPA, updated, and the upgrade broke a bunch of packages, as usual. Not sure what's causing it, but it's beyond me.
