Under my old Ubuntu system there used to be a printer icon in the system tray. From there I could control the jobs on the printer queue. Is there an equivalant in Mint 12 with Cinnamon, and if so, how do I install it.
Thanks
James

Re: Printer Control Icon in System Tray
Hello James. I can't tell you if there is a way to achieve what you're looking for; but you can create a launcher with the following command:
That will display the priter configuration utility and to manage queue you just need to select the printer and hit Ctrl+f. You can try this while you find something better. Regards!.
Code: Select all
system-config-printer

Thanks Mike
I have managed to find a way using a CUPS web page http://localhost:631/printers/ so that will do for now.
Can you explain what a "launcher" is and where it would go when I created it please?
Cheers

Re: Printer Control Icon in System Tray
Hello again James. That command also works as a CUPS server configuration program. A launcher is an easy way to execute a command or a series of commands with a simple double click over it; you can create them in the desktop, menu, panels, etc. If you're using Gnome 2.x version, you can easilly place a launcher in the top panel for an easy access, just right click over the desired panel and click create launcher (in command field copy/paste the previously provided command, then you can customize the launcher icon as you like; we'll just need to check if the command is appropriate for your linux version, try it and if it's not working we can easilly check for a similar one). If you are on Gnome shell, for a fast access, you can create an entry in the menu with a program named alacarte (look for it with software center or synaptics); launch alacarte aka Main Menu and create and new item in the category that you want, and the process is the same as before: in command field copy/paste provided command and customize icon and name as you like; after that you can place the launcher in your favorite apps in the gnome dash and that will let you launch the application in a flash. Hope this help!.
P.S. I'm attaching some screenshots to clarify the steps for Gnome shell, the one I'm working on:

Hello James. Great to hear that and hope everything is going really good now. Regards!.
Re: Printer Control Icon in System Tray
Also have no printer control icon in task bar in Cinnamon, LM12, Main Edition. The suggestion to browse to http://localhost:631/printers/ is appreciated. It is simple and works well. I only discovered this when I had to cancel a 14-page print job and could find no way to do it from any menu. I'm probably missing something obvious as usual, but I never had this problem since Mint 8. Anywho, I'm sure if this is a bug, it will be fixed as Cinnamon is worth any effort!
