Clam Antivirus
I've been struggling with this from the first day I installed Linux Mint being able to install Clam Antivirus. I have it installed from the software packages provided with the build herein lies the problem.. The GUI and the engine are out of date.. what I'd like to do is to unistall all of it and start fresh.. problem is I haven't mastered the Terminal commands. Could somebody please explain the correct way to get this done.. I'd be most grateful.. I feel once I learn how to install this one application from start to finish I'll be able to do it on my own and then go on to help others do the same..
Thanks in advance..

Re: Clam Antivirus
Hey,
I am a new user too, dont know the terminal commands but you can go to software manager and search clam and then select all the options that show installed and hit uninstall. It will work just as well. Restart the software manager and check clam again, it should show not installed.

Re: Clam Antivirus
Don't let items like the GUI or engine reporting to be out of date sway you. The distribution developers often opt for an older more stable release rather than the latest version available. You'll see this with other applications like Firefox and Thunderbird all the time.
This pretty much holds true for most distributions.

I was wondering about that.. with the way they are developing some of these applications take for instance Google Chrome its updated every day. So yes what you are saying makes perfect sense..

Re: Clam Antivirus
Antivirus software really isn't needed in Linux Mint, or any other Linux based operating system. This isn't Windows, therefore Windows viruses do not infect Linux machines. On top of that, any Linux virus that may be out in the wild (next to none) probably no longer has any affect on Linux due to it's constant updates. The only thing you may ever want an antivirus for in Linux is when you are sharing files with Windows users. Mainly emails with attachments. Any virus that is in those attachments will not affect you, but could hurt a Windows user. However, generally, an antivirus is not needed for personal use.
If you still want an antivirus though, then I'd recommend trying Avast (free for home use). http://www.avast.com/linux-home-edition
----
By the way, if you are new to Linux as a whole, and not just Linux Mint, then I'd recommend reading http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm at least once. It helps you to understand some of the differences between Linux and Windows, although it is slightly outdated (2006?). If you have any more questions, feel free to ask away here on the forums.

Re: Clam Antivirus
Thanks guys you've all been a great help and your right I've been reading up on Linux and Virus.. they are like oil and water.. Seems everywhere i go people are saying the same thing about Linux.. it works entirely different than Windows.. they are miles apart from one another.. the odds of getting an infection are slim to none..
Thanks again..

*edit* Thanks for the link to the Avast Antivirus but you see I'd have the same problem.. don't know how to install it..

Re: Clam Antivirus
If you do wish to install it there should be a read me file within the download files containing instruction on how to install...just make sure you choose the Debian package not rpm. But like the others have said, anti-virus is not needed for a Linux OS as long as you have a firewall up, and probably not even then as your ISP and router both have firewalls up and running
Re: Clam Antivirus
Thanks for the input, the more i think about it the more i think Linux is bullet proof..

Re: Clam Antivirus
terminal commands for updating Clam AV:
sudo freshclam -v (this check is Clam AV is outdated, and in this case update him)
You can also use ClamTk , that is a GUI for ClamAV and is available via the terminal or by Ubuntu/LM repository.

Re: Clam Antivirus
Yes, as someone rightly pointed out, u would not need an AV in Linux, however if you want to keep it, just ensure that the antivirus definitions are up to date. The GUI and the engine would be the most stable one implemented for the edition u use, it will update automatically if u have auto updates on when someone updates the repository.
Re: Clam Antivirus
Thanks guys this is means great deal to me, have all of your advice bookmarked, today i invested in a book called DOS for Dummies at $.25 i couldn't refuse.. One day, Lord willing, the shoe will be on the other foot and I'll be able to repay your kindness..

Re: Clam Antivirus
Just adding my two cents worth here,
As many people have mentioned, you don't need an antivirus on your linux system, but please bear in mind that you need to have your firewall up and running. This is especially true if you are going to be online for any length of time.
Secondly, the clamav anti-virus does not work like a windows antivirus. You need to run it every time for it to sniff out any viruses in your system. It does not continue to run in the background.
A better thing for you to do would be to read up on firewalls and how to set them up. In fact (in my opinion that is) you can make your windows system itself much safer if you configure the firewall well (although I would never recommend that anyone move to windows after sampling mint).

Re: Clam Antivirus
a strong defect i detected on Linux Mint was that UFW comes Disabled, is the olny defect that i detected on LM in addiiton with the Banshee/Gnome bug.
Respect viruses, Linux is relative secure but is recommend using clam AV (however i dont use it xd).
Linux mint says and proclare "no virus" but this is an error, viruses exists, more of the new viruses are cross platforms with new methods. Sayings users that there are no viruses is an error, repository is not a magic solution.
Linux now has relative low population by lucky.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamsentinel/
Features
Adds a real-time scanner to ClamWin
Integrated intrusion detection
Proactive heuristic protection
USB and removable drive protection
Uses ClamWin quarantine folder
Scan logs for real-time, drives, memory, and messages
Default configuration suitable for most users
Easy custom configuration via system tray icon
Supports Windows 98 and newer computers
Supports English, Italian, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Polish, Russian, or Portuguese languages
Multiple user support

Re: Clam Antivirus
Many times you will get outdated (stable) software from the repositories. Many times, you will never get a major update from the repositories either. This is by design.
If you want the newest software, you should consider adding the ppa for the software. Essentially, a ppa is a repository for one specific source. Adding the ppa for Firefox, for example, would deliver any/all new updates for firefox via the update manager.
Go to synaptic package manager>settings>repositories, or just bring up software sources.
Add this ppa
Now go to terminal. followed by

To add a repository via the command line
Or just add it in synaptic/software sources.
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-clamav/ppa
