Installer won't boot in UEFI mode (just Legacy)

Post by birkopf »

Hi guys,

I asked few times for your help and on each occasion I received valuable response. Currently I am facing similar issue...
I purchased Lenovo Z710 and; after severe problems, I managed to install Mint. However, laptop had hardware problems so
returned it to service and I purchased MSI GP70 2PE.

I am currently travelling with my MSI and have limited internet connectivity. Pre-installed Windows 8.1 is driving me mad, and I really
want to install Mint, but I am encountering typical installation problems. I am afraid that jumping locations and internet connections
(from hotel to hotel) I will simply leave my machine without operating system :(

I read everything on this forum in regards to installation of Mint and this excellent article is much of help ( http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=163126 )
Unfortunately, no matter what I do - I cannot boot installation USB in UEFI. I have to switch to Legacy for system to start from USB, and (according to above article)
if I install in that mode I will not have the boot loader, which was my previous problem...

I have disabled fast boot, secure boot, made space for linux and defragmented HDD under windows 8.1 64bit.

- Can someone advise how should I proceed to install Linux Mint (mate or xfce) on MIS GP70 without the risk of losing both systems ?

If you have try everything to boot Mint live in UEFI mode with no results , you can install Mint in legacy. So you will have a single boot (need to change from UEFI to legacy depending on the system you want to boot). But if you want dual boot, you will need to change Legacy Mint to UEFI mode using Boot Repair USB . Look here.

There is nothing dangerous to your Windows, but make a Recovery System image with MSI Recovery Tool before and a backup copy of your Data first.

I have been trying from march 2014 and hope Mint 17.2 will solve the MSI/MINT UEFI issue (betsy didn't). Good luck.

Edited to clarify there is a single boot option and added link to try changing kernel parameters on booting Mint live.

Thanks for fast reply. Unfortunately I don't have empty DVD-RW with me to create recovery and there is no chance to buy anything around,
but MSI gives me option to create recovery on D:/ partition so I am making just in case. I will give it a try in Legacy and switch to EFI and
hopefully I will save myself problems which I encountered with Lenovo...

If anyone has got other tips please let me know. I will install grub in sda2 which in my case is EFI partition.

You must to be sure you are not able to boot Mint live in the recommended way first (i.e. UEFI mode), so try Rufus to created Mint live USB device. Then try different kernel parameters (i.e. typing "nomodeset xforcevesa" and deleting "quite splash") in GRUB. Installing Mint in Legacy would be the last chance.

Partial success... or rather partial failure :) On this MSI, I can start Boot USB with Mint in UEFI and it will show for some reason grub menu where I am choosing installation but it won't go/ Perhaps something needs to be changed ? I switched to legacy, installed, switched back to UEFI and now it will not run boot-repair because of some strange error. I will try to re-do boot repairs usb using rufus as suggested and give it a try...

There is no installation option in Mint's GRUB menu (as Ubuntu's). Also you should have created USB Mint Live with Rufus before attempting Legacy install.,s

Grub is likely installed to your MBR.

You might try installing grub-efi to your computer's boot partition.
You might also check the structure of your boot system:
efi/EFI/boot/ubuntu

Then, reboot.

Birkopf,If that strange error is still there when attempting Boot Repair, please provide the Pastebin link .

PD:I forget , you can also try rEFind flash/cd and then do as Resistor and srs5694 tell to install efi-grub.This is something that Boot Repair Standard option must do when booting in UEFI mode (if there was nothing strange when installing Mint as per link proposed) and an advanced repair option.

JOPETA wrote:Also REefind flash would help but I've never try REefind when Mint is in Legacy and Windows in UEFI.
The installation mode (BIOS/CSM/legacy vs. EFI/UEFI) is irrelevant to a USB-based (or CD-based) rEFInd; once rEFInd has started, it should be able to detect and boot a kernel. Once the Linux OS has booted, it will be in EFI mode, even if the installation was in BIOS mode. It should then be possible to install the EFI version of GRUB or install rEFInd to the hard disk. Used in this way, rEFInd works something like Super GRUB 2 Disk.

No, I installed grub to sda2 where my EFI sits. Eveyrhting has been done correctly acording to tutorial, but it won't start.
Boot Repair throws up an error saying that in order to proceed kernel has to be updated and it won't do it so after 15 min of wait it reverts all changes...

When you install in EFI mode, you should not be prompted about where to install GRUB. (At least, that's the case for Ubuntu. It's conceivable that Mint is different on this detail. It's been a while since I've checked.) In EFI mode, the EFI boot loader is installed to the EFI System Partition (ESP), and the MBR is not touched (except possibly to tweak its protective partition as part of the partitioning operation). Only when you install in BIOS/CSM/legacy mode is the MBR altered by writing part of the BIOS-mode boot loader there.

One option you might want to consider is this:
  1. Using Windows tools, resize your Windows partitions to make room for Mint. Don't create partitions in Windows for Mint, though (unless you've already done so).
  2. Boot the Mint installation disc. Which mode (BIOS/CSM/legacy vs. EFI/UEFI) is irrelevant.
  3. Open a Terminal window.
  4. Type "ubiquity -b". The installer will launch. The "-b" option tells it to not install a boot loader, which is why your boot mode is irrelevant -- it'll do exactly the same thing in either mode.
  5. Install normally. If you create your partitions manually, do not create a separate /boot partition and do not use RAID or LVM. (There are ways to get it to work with these more complex tools, but they add some small complications later.)
  6. When you're done, Mint will be installed but unbootable. Don't reboot yet, though....
  7. Download the USB flash drive or CD-R version of my rEFInd boot manager.
  8. Prepare a medium with rEFInd.
  9. Reboot into the rEFInd medium. (Note that you may need to disable Secure Boot, if you haven't done so already.)
  10. rEFInd should give you options to boot both Windows and Mint (which will probably be misidentified as Ubuntu). Test Windows and then reboot and test Mint. If they both work, proceed....
  11. In Mint, install the rEFInd Debian package or PPA (both available from the rEFInd link noted earlier).
  12. Reboot. With luck, rEFInd will come up. If it doesn't, use the "bcdedit" command in a Windows Administrator Command Prompt window, as described in the rEFInd Windows installation instructions.
Instead of the last two steps, you could try manually installing the EFI version of GRUB.

The point of this procedure is that it's relatively safe because you'll only be making boot loader changes at the very end, after you've confirmed that rEFInd can actually boot Linux. Of course, there's always the risk of damage when you resize your Mint installation or when you select the partitions to which you want to install (or let the installer do so automatically). Creating a backup before you begin is advisable.

Thanks again srs5694 :D Only for your knowledge, Birkopf is now at point 6 (with Mint already installed in Legacy) and has an strange error when trying Boot Repair (maybe, related to your point 4, a bad loader placement). Good luck.

=================== Suggested repair
The default repair of the Boot-Repair utility would purge (in order to fix packages sign-grub fix executable) and reinstall the grub-efi-amd64-signed of sda8, using the following options: kernel-purge sda2/boot/efi,
Additional repair would be performed: unhide-bootmenu-10s fix-windows-boot

=================== Final advice in case of suggested repair
Please do not forget to make your BIOS boot on sda2/efi/.../grub*.efi file!

If your computer reboots directly into Windows, try to change the boot order in your BIOS.
If your BIOS does not allow to change the boot order, change the default boot entry of the Windows bootloader.
For example you can boot into Windows, then type the following command in an admin command prompt:
bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\...\grub*.efi

=================== User settings
The settings chosen by the user will not act on the boot.
I have installed Mint using suggestions aove and all went well. However, when I booted to Linux and installed rEFInd,
this is the error I got and I still cannot boot to Linux

ALERT:
Installation has completed, but problems were detected. Review the output for
error messages and take corrective measures as necessary. You may need to
re-run this script or install manually before rEFInd will work.

I am not sure why it would say that there is no space in my EFI partition...
Do you guys have any ideas ?

The ESP is a separate partition from everything else, so it can easily fill up if something is dumping a lot of files there or if it's undersized. Yours is plenty big for normal use, so something is chewing up more space than it should. The task is the same as figuring out what's using too much space anywhere. To that end, here are some pointers on figuring out what's using disk space generally; you must simply apply them to /boot/efi:
Note that some of these talk about tools to isolate the problem to a particular partition, but you already know it's the ESP (/boot/efi in Mint) that's the problem.

Once you've identified the file(s) that are consuming too much space, you must decide what to do. If you don't recognize the file and know it's safe to delete it, you should research it or ask more. Depending on your configuration, it might or might not be safe to delete it.

Once you've fixed the problem, try re-installing rEFInd.

I still have aplenty of space there, so the problem must be coming from the first installation.
Do you know which folder in EFI partition (in my case it is the most popular sda2) belong to linux and if I can remove them safely ?

You're getting "no space left on device" errors, which clearly indicate that you do not have "aplenty of space" on the target partition. To double-check that, try this:

Code: Select all

df -h
That will show you how much disk space is used and available on every mounted filesystem. Look especially at the values for "/boot/efi". If I'm right and it's at 100% used, then you need to figure out what file(s) are consuming the excess space on that partition; that's the point of the links I provided earlier.
