how to kill and start X11 server?
using LM
$ uname -a
Linux GB006412 3.2.0-23-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 20:41:14 UTC 2012 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
cat /etc/issue
Linux Mint 13 Maya \n \l
using fluxbox as WM and MDM as DM
I'm from a slackware background so quite savvy. Oddly ctrl+alt+backspace does not kill then start X server.
Any ideas how this is done on LM?
tried google in context of the issue and LM
"sudo restart mdm"
seems to want to start on another display and prompts - "what do I do?" in not so many words.
in short, all I want is a shortcut that kills the DM and starts it again once it's been killed,
I can write a script to do this, akin to (init 3; sleep 7; init 4)
but surely LM has a better way than that right?

Re: how to kill and start X11 server?
In Openbox I can either run 'openbox --exit', or include a menu option called 'exit'. Fluxbox should be at least similar, if not identical.
There is also 'openbox --replace' to restart openbox on the fly i.e. it will keep all your windows open.

Ctrl+Alt+backspace will also kill X if you enable it.
Re: how to kill and start X11 server?
W/fluxbox and NO display/session-manager, I logout (thru fluxbox menu) and X stops. "startx" and it's going again.using fluxbox as WM and MDM as DM
To do that, make this ludicrous change to /etc/init/tty1.conf :
Code: Select all
# for automatic login w/o a session manager:
exec /bin/login -f lemur tty1 </dev/tty1 >/dev/tty1 2>&1
# regular:
# exec /sbin/getty -8 38400 tty1
Edit: or kill
/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc
