[SOLVED] Unable to connect to extra.linuxmint.com:http:

Post by Ansmann »

Hello!

I'm having a problem on three different laptops, two running Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon 64-bit and one running Linux Mint 17.2 Cinnamon 64-bit.

I did a fresh install of Linux Mint 17.2 on a laptop (Asus UX32VD) and checked the md5sum of the downloaded iso. After installation, I got the following when doing sudo apt-get update:
Err http://extra.linuxmint.com rafaela InRelease

Err http://extra.linuxmint.com rafaela Release.gpg
Unable to connect to extra.linuxmint.com:http:
Fetched 744 kB in 2min 0s (6.190 B/s)
Reading package lists... Done
W: Failed to fetch http://extra.linuxmint.com/dists/rafaela/InRelease

W: Failed to fetch http://extra.linuxmint.com/dists/rafaela/Release.gpg Unable to connect to extra.linuxmint.com:http:

W: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I can not connect to extra.linuxmint.com from my browser either. I tried the other computers here and all suffer from the same problem not being able to connect to extra.linuxmint.com.

Here is my output of inxi -r:

Any idea what causes this? Is this a DNS issue?
These guys from GutterClutterBuster probably don't know what hit them.

Update manager failing to fetch repository

Post by 1.618 »

Using mint17 Qainna Mate , trying to run update manager this morning gives this error, have left it a few hours and tried a couple more times in case it was a glitch somewhere but still getting this error
Failed to fetch http://extra.linuxmint.com/dists/qiana/InRelease
Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

No, that's not the problem, because the same IP exists for packages.linuxmint.com, and that repo updates fine.

Code: Select all

ping packages.linuxmint.com
PING packages.linuxmint.com (204.45.82.194) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from server.gutterclutterbuster.com (204.45.82.194): icmp_seq=1 ttl=48 time=151 ms
64 bytes from server.gutterclutterbuster.com (204.45.82.194): icmp_seq=2 ttl=48 time=151 ms
there is obviously a problem with the repo extra.linuxmint.com and why it's intermittently not allowing anyone to update.

Regarding your question: There is at now a problem with this server. Wait until it gets fixed. (It does not contain crucial packages.)

In general: I strongly dis-advice to use apt-get upgrade. This does break the Mint level system for safe updates and can bring you into troubles. Use the update manager instead.

Thanks kindly for the heads up!

Thanks for this heads up. I was wondering what was going on, because I got the same error on both my computers.

Thought it might be at my end. Now I need not worry anymore.

Merged 3 threads about the same issue
Clem has upgraded and rebooted the server with extra.linuxmint.com and packages.linuxmint.com
Hopefully that has fixed it

My thanks to Clem! For anyone who has similar problems in the future and finds this thread, I got around the problem (while it existed) by testing/switching to another server. See this post.

Having had the same non-updating problem after my upgrade from Mint17 I followed the 3 sudo commands under 'First of all you need to update the system' on the page below

https://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/8 ... -mint-172/

It seemed to do the trick with both my desktop and with the Mint installed on an old external USB drive.

At least - the Update Manager apparently completed an update cycle without stopping, and showed my system as being 'Up to date', even after a refresh.

EDIT

I forgot to mention that the first terminal command (sudo apt-get update) also did not complete, but I continued through the other two commands anyway.

EDIT again

Though I suppose it's perfectly possible that the update web page was fixed while I was messing around with the Terminal commands?

and AGAIN

Another thing I forgot was that during processing one of the commands, it offered me the choice to remain with 'my' version, or to change to the 'original maintainers' version - (or something along those lines.)
I chose to change to the maintainers version.
Sorry I can't be more specific, just going from memory.
