You obviously read the drive as you get that error message
Please describe exactly what happens including the exact error message

And this is a USB disk?
I find this error message in conjunction with shares (samba)
Does it have a line in /etc/fstab ?
Look at /etc/mtab with the disk unconnected and then connected - see if you find any difference
If you know its designation (/dev/sdxx) you could try pmount /dev/sdxx - no sudo
I must say it's strange
It's like something is looking for a folder when you connect - have you disconnected without first unmounting at some time?
This can destroy the file system - I had that happen to a Creative Zen (managed to fix it with a bit of tweaking - I am a geek )
