How to increase resolution on projector (two monitors)

Post by 03927e9c »

I have an Aspire laptop, with ATI Radeon HD 4200, and the resolution on the laptop screen is fine (could be bigger tho) but when I connect with a cable to my other monitor I only get to choose 1024x768. Everything looks big and messy, how can I increase the resolution?

EDIT: I have Linux Mint Mate x64

Thanks.

What is the make and model of the monitor/projector?

Hmm... that monitor has a native resolution of 1280x1024 through a VGA interface. It *should* allow you to select 1280x1024.

Some VGA cables do not pass the signals necessary to get the monitor ID (and many older monitors don't provide one). Have you tried a different VGA cable?

I'm a bit confused - the title of your post mentions a projector - where does the projector fit into your query?

Well it works as projector, my bad, it's just a monitor, and yes I've tried with differente cables. And different computers. I have desktop PC with LM and the resolutions its fine (1280x1024)

Then all I can suggest is to look in your laptop's manual and find out what the max resolution is for the external VGA port. It may be limited to 1024x768, so that's all you get. Shouldn't be that low if the laptop is less than 5 years old, but I've seen such limitations on older machines.

Thaks for the response. No it's not because while back I had Windows on that laptop and the resolution was bigger than 1024x768.
What about xong.conf??? I tried it but I guess I'm not that pro to do it.

You need to post some additional information. Use these commands in the Terminal:

Code: Select all

1. inxi -Fx
2. xrandr

3. Use this command to open the “Xorg.0.log” file, or open the Log File Viewer:

Code: Select all

pluma /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Press Ctrl+A to select the entire file contents. Right click on the screen and select “Copy”. Don't save it to a file. Open the Mint Forum reply window and select “Code” in the menu. Paste the copied lines between the two code words.

If you have problems posting that long file, then upload it to pastebin.com by using this command:

Code: Select all

pastebin /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window.

Re: How to increase resolution on projector (two monitors)

Use this command in the Terminal to create an xorg.conf file:

Code: Select all

gksudo pluma /etc/X11/xorg.conf
In the empty opened file, add these lines:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Layout0"
    Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "Monitor0"
   Option "PreferredMode" "1366x768"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "Monitor1"
   Option "LeftOf" "Monitor0"
   Option "Primary" "true"
   HorizSync 30.0 - 81.0
   VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0
   Modeline "1280x1024_60.00" 63.50 1024 1072 1176 1328 768 771 775 798 -hsync +vsync
   Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024"
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Device0"
   Driver "radeon"
   Option "Monitor-LVDS" "Monitor0"
   Option "Monitor-VGA-0" "Monitor1"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "Screen0"
   Device "Device0"
   Monitor "Monitor0"
   DefaultDepth 24
EndSection
Log out and back in.

If there is a startup problem and you can't get to the desktop, then reboot and select Recovery Mode at the GRUB boot menu. If no menu shows, then hold down the Shift key while starting, or keep tapping the key. In the menu, select “root - drop to root shell prompt”. When asked for the root password, just type your user password. Then change the file permissions to read and write by typing:

Code: Select all

mount -o remount,rw /

Then remove the xorg.conf file by typing this command:

Code: Select all

rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Then type this command and wait: reboot

I made an error. The section of the modeline in the second Monitor section after "1280x1024_60.00" was for a 1024x768 resolution. Open the xorg.conf file, remove all the lines and then add these lines. There's one other change I made:

Code: Select all

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Layout0"
    Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "Monitor0"
   Option "PreferredMode" "1366x768"
   Option "Primary" "true"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
   Identifier "Monitor1"
   Option "LeftOf" "Monitor0"
   HorizSync 30.0 - 81.0
   VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0
   Modeline "1280x1024_60.00" 90.75 1280 1328 1360 1440 1024 1027 1034 1054 +hsync -vsync
   Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024"
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Device0"
   Driver "radeon"
   Option "Monitor-LVDS" "Monitor0"
   Option "Monitor-VGA-0" "Monitor1"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
   Identifier "Screen0"
   Device "Device0"
   Monitor "Monitor0"
   DefaultDepth 24
EndSection
Log out and back in. If that doesn't work, post another Xorg.0.log file, and then change the modeline in the second Monitor section to this:

Code: Select all

Modeline "1280x1024_60.00" 109.00 1280 1368 1496 1712 1024 1027 1034 1063 -hsync +vsync

Thank you very much, that worked! I had to edit the file with the second modeline code you posted. Now if I wanted to increase the resolution even more? I just type the resolution numbers into the file? Or is that the biggest resolution for my monitor?

The first modeline was generated by using the cvt utility with reduced blanking, which is better for digital displays:

Code: Select all

cvt -r 1280 1024
Modeline "1280x1024R" 90.75 1280 1328 1360 1440 1024 1027 1034 1054 +hsync -vsync
However, since the monitor is using an analog signal, the second modeline was generated without the reduced blanking option, which was designed for CRT displays using an analog signal:

Code: Select all

cvt 1280 1024
Modeline "1280x1024_60.00" 109.00 1280 1368 1496 1712 1024 1027 1034 1063 -hsync +vsync

The maximum resolution supported by your monitor is 1280x1024 at 75 Hz. The Samsung User Manual for a Samsung 732 N Plus monitor can be obtained at this website: http://www.samsung.com/my/support/model/LS17PEASF/XME

Page 65 is shown below and lists the specifications:

Hey there sorry to post again, but I've come with a problem with the monitor. After all worked out great I've noticed that when the monitor is on it makes a beep sound, something like a signal, and it's constant and very ear piercing, even with the speakers on. When I turn it off, it stops...

What could it be? I think is something on that xorg file, because with the previous computer it didn't make no beep sound (wasn't necessary no xorg file to increase resolution)

I haven't seen anything like this happen in any previous topic I've worked in. First try pressing the monitor's “Auto” button.

Then use this command to rename the xorg.conf file to see if the sound disappears:

Code: Select all

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old
To enable the file again:

Code: Select all

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old /etc/X11/xorg.conf
This info is from the user manual for a 1280x1024 resolution:

Code: Select all

1280 x 1024 63.981 60.020 108.000 +/+
These are the values being used from the created modeline:

Code: Select all

1280 x 1024 63.67 60.00" 109.00 -/+
There's a difference in one of the Sync Polarity values (horizontal/vertical) but I don't know how much significance this has.

Is your system a dual-boot with Windows, or do you have another Windows computer to connect the monitor to? Then the monitor's EDID can be retrieved from it if there's no similar sound.

Re: How to increase resolution on projector (two monitors)

Well, I know what the problem is: the monitor it self. Just Linux here, no double connections. Grabbed the monitor with two different cables (VGA and power) and connected it to a different laptop with just Windows and the beep is still there. The noise only disappears when the monitor is off or it has no signal.

So it seems the problem is the monitor itself, might be because is old and has a lot of usage. The reason I didn't hear it before must be because I had a PC and the coolers covered the beep noise.

I'm guessing there's no solution but to buy a new one, god damn it.
