Hi there,

Where do you need to type it? Libreoffice Calc? Writer? Or something else?

I need to type it into proprietary Accuplacer software online. Copy and paste unfortunately does not work. All my math homework and tests are done online with this program in the browser.

Can assigning a new value to some dead key be a feasible way for you?

And, do you need to type just the or also the top bar that goes after it?

Here is what I am trying to type the symbol in.

This is just a practice test but the real thing is exactly the same.

And, do you need to type just the √ or also the top bar that goes after it?
I am not sure but I don't know how to do either...

If you mean like in answer e), where you have that square root of 2 and 8, I honestly don’t know.

I can tell you how to assign a dead key to the square root symbol, but then would it work?

Have a try:

Alt+F2 ->

Code: Select all

sudo nemo /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/
and insert the keyring password.
Find your keyboard layout, duplicate it just in case, and then proceed to modify it double clicking on it.

You’ll find values like

Code: Select all

key <AC01> {   [     a,   A,   æ,   Æ      ]   };
This is for my A key for example, where it types "a" if pressed alone, "A" if pressed together with Shift, "æ" if pressed together with AltGr, "Æ" if pressed with AltGr+Shift.

Find a suitable key for you (V, maybe?) and assign to the third level (AltGr) the unicode value for √ (just write U221A); save the file, then delete all the *.xkm files in /var/lib/xkb/.

I don’t know if the V key has other values apart from v and V. Please remember to add a comma after V, otherwise it will just give an error once you log in.

As the last passage, restart the computer to force to OS to recreate the new *xkm files

PS: this for my Mint 17.3 Cinnamon, I guess it should be the same for your systems, too?

If I'm looking at your screenshot correctly, take a look at the upper left corner. It looks like you just click on the symbol you want to use. In this case, it should be the 4th row of symbols.

/sqrt makes the symbol. Some of the others appear just by clicking on them though. How messed up is that....

It's a little late, of course, and looks like you got the problem fixed this time around. But just in case you have this problem again and there isn't a way to type in the square root symbol, keep in mind that roots can also be expressed as exponentials.

So sqrt(4) is the same as 4^(1/2). :mrgreen:

BTW: what are you studying?
