15 years away from Linux, its good to be back
Just saying Hi from down under,
Old Linux user from way back when Linux was new, the old days, stopped using Linux in 2001 and became a standard Windows user, Tried Linux again this month because my youngest son came home from school wanting to learn about coding and creating programs after him and few of his classmates created a phone app.
We set about a farther and son project, pulled a old P4 system from junk, few simple upgrades to memory and graphics card and then we downloaded 9 different Linux distributions and set about installing them and giving them a quick trial.
Boy I have forgotten allot about Linux, but...... I use to set up Linux networks and servers back in the day so I knew Linux extremely well once, It was a real eye opener to see how much development has happened in my 15 years away from Linux.... I mean WOW,
Mint become our choice at this stage for his Linux box until my son learns more but.....
I was so impress with Mint I have ditched windows 10 totally in this household, Mint KDE is my OS now, My oldest son ditched windows 8.1 and now runs Ubuntu, My wife's laptop we ditched windows 7 and now runs Mint Cinnamon and my youngest son uses mint on his linux box.
I know a good OS when I see one, now to relearn the finer points of Linux again

Welcome to the Mint family, and happy Minting!

Welcome back!
Allow me to recommend C++, the Qt API and PostgreSQL as your development tools. QtCreator comes with the SDK and is also in the repository. If you are running the KDE4 desktop then the Qt 4 API is the one to choose, otherwise Qt 5. The difference is the addition of web dev capabilities in addition to the standard client or client-server apps. The best GUI for PostgreSQL is pgadmin3. A tutorial on how to install and configure PostgreSQL 9.4 on Linux Mint 17 is here. Forget the install part because all you need to do is use Synaptic and install them from the repository. QtCreator is similar to Microsoft's VisualStudio, or it was when I was using both tools eight years ago. It is a drag and drop gui rad tool. The Qt API builds on the extraordinary power of OOP using C++.
Here is the Qt 4.7 HTML documentation
I am recommending Qt and its tools because in forty years it was the most enjoyable and most powerful dev tool I ever used.

I'm not surprised! 15 years is a long time and a lot has happened in that time. Nice, isn't it.stargazerpjs wrote: I use to set up Linux networks and servers back in the day so I knew Linux extremely well once, It was a real eye opener to see how much development has happened in my 15 years away from Linux.... To people who ask me why I switched away from Windows now, and not earlier, I say 'I had to be ready for Linux... and Linux had to be ready for me.'
Welcome, I hope you'll enjoy!
If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!

Re: 15 years away from Linux, its good to be back
Welcome to the forum! I recently tried running Windows 10 on an HP 655 laptop for classes I am taking, it nearly drove me insane!
Re: 15 years away from Linux, its good to be back
Welcome Back as well.
As an old-school mandrake/mandriva user myself, i know about the shock of coming back.
Many things have changed, and most things have a GUI front-end these days.
The low-level stuff(i.e. compiling, coding, etc) is still the same down deep
