Update manager issue (Chrome related) [SOLVED]

This cropped up a couple days ago. I'm attaching a screenshot...

My system is a HP Stream with 32 bit LM 17.3 installed.

I'm using Chrome browser which may be running out of updates and tripped things up?

Google has dropped support for the 32-bit version of chrome.

Time to switch to another browser. If you like chrome, you could try chromium browser (the open source browser that chrome is based on). Firefox is another popular alternative.

Oh, and for 64-bit users getting an error when updating their repositories, you can fix that by editing the sources list entry for chrome.

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list

Add [arch=amd64] after deb, as follows:

Save, exit and update, and you should no longer be receiving the error.

Is Chrome the cause of my Update Manager issue?

I started to dump Chrome (which I like) but cant figure out how to save my bookmarks.

Thank you I might like to try chromium ... Ive used Firefox but have had problems on some sites, and Chrome worked better. Sorry to lose it.

Install chromium browser and log into your google account and it should sync your bookmarks and settings.

To install chromium browser...

sudo apt-get install chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-extra
sudo apt-get install chromium-browser-l10n

The last two add A/V codecs for content playback, and additional language support (if you want those).

Once you log into your google account, chromium should sync all your chrome preferences, bookmarks and add-ons. This will work even if you have already uninstalled chrome, providing you have a google account (and have it set to backup your data).

And do read the announcement I linked above. It has some important info about flash support.

EDIT: And don't forget to uninstall chrome...

Yeah I really like Chrome also, my browser of choice, and on my Chromebook, I have no choice anyway since it is the only one available>>LOL. I IMO, think it is really dumb that the good people at Mint stopped supporting Chrome, but CHROMIUM is essentially the same thing, and has done everything for me the same. I did however have an issue not being able to play some music from a MySpace site (Yes MySpace still exists>>LOL), and found the issue was in, chrome://plugins, the box next to Adobe Flash needs to be checked, "Always allow to run." Chrome had the same issue. I have no idea why that box is not DEFAULT checked. Took me awhile to figure that one out

I will be the first to acknowledge I am far far from a Linux expert, but why do people always jump on using all this, "sudo alt," crap??

I installed CHROMIUM right from the, Software Manager. They must have created that for us DUMMIES>>LOL.

Because whatever the DE the user is using, this command will run. We don't need to explain in details like click on this button if you use this, or on this button if you use that...
And if there is an error being returned, we have it immediately and the user can paste it.

So far, this has solved the “Red X” on the update shield issue for me. All other “solutions” posted have not worked. Seems simple enough and I don't see any reason why I shouldn't stick with it. I have now and always have had the 64 bit version of Chrome downloaded and installed directly from Google….not the Mint repository.

Then did this:

Who cares. Chrome is no longer supported. Use Chomium instead
