I'm having the same problem. A bit annoying when I turn the speakers up to get normal sound in Mint, then boot into windows and get blasted.

Some people have suggested installing gnome-alsamixer and using it to adjust the system sound. I did that (had to crank the first three sliders  ) and found I have much clearer, louder sound now. Might be worth a try?

I like gnome-alsamixer. Also watch the last 4 toggles (via).
