Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial Xerus has been released!

Post by Pjotr »

Ubuntu 16.04 has landed! Get your own copy here:
Ubuntu: http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/
Xubuntu: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/relea ... 4/release/
Lubuntu: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/relea ... 4/release/

At the time I wrote this, the official announcement wasn't there yet, but this is the one and only. :D

This fine Ubuntu LTS will be the base for the upcoming Linux Mint 18. I've tested it a lot, in the last couple of weeks. Xenial is a job exceedingly well done. There could be no better foundation for Mint 18.

For those of you who like my to-do lists, I've created them for Ubuntu 16.04 as well:
Ubuntu: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... ject/first
Xubuntu: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... st-xubuntu
Lubuntu: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinux ... st-lubuntu

Have fun! :)

Lots to get excited about in Ubuntu 16.04. It's quite an upgrade after years of uninspiring releases.
The version with added Mint sauce will be awesome, no doubt.

Ubuntu Mate 16.04 is getting some blazing reviews, so the Mint boys will really have to pull it out of the bag with the Mate release. Not investigated it in any detail myself as I prefer Cinnamon.

Hello Pjotr and thanks for the heads-up. It sounds like there's a lot to like and I'll probably install it to one of my spare drives tonight.

I've downloaded both 32- and 64-bit versions of Ubuntu. I'm grabbing the 32-bit and PowerPC versions of Lubuntu as well; I'm excited to see how it'll do on my iMac G4 "Luxo Lamp".

Kubuntu is out as well. DOwnloading via torrent now.

It's a potential tide over until Mint 18 but I am screaming to run the latest version of Kdenlive while keeping access to my existing software.

Kubuntu looks like my best bet for that... pending Mint 18.

I read, that there is a new default calendar app: Gnome calendar. What is it: This or that or something else?

Will Mint 18 support AMD GPU?
or end up the same fate as Ubuntu 16.04?

UH? The x86 code is compatible with both Intel and AMD. AMD machines should run fine with Ubuntu or any x86 code based machine - as long as it's remotely up date (NX Bit supported, for instance.)

It's ARM that has a problem!

What's the beef on AMD?
[I will grant that AMD are slow with graphics drivers but generic drivers should give something and AMD are working on proper Linux drivers as a process now.]

Oh, sorry.
Very tired. It's overtime on top of over time - and will be until I get out of this contract!

I thought I'd see what all the hype was about. So I backed up my Mint KDE installation on my laptop and installed Kubuntu instead.

First mistake - Format the Root partition. I didn't and it tried to reinstall my KDE apps, without success. Tried again and formatted it this time.

Installation went fine and Grub saw both Kubuntu and Windows 7. Configured everything as close as I could to my PC settings. Out of the box, it looks terrible. There is only one wallpaper supplied and Dolphin looks like it was designed by a five year old. Basic programs such as System Settings and Kinfo crash on me in the middle of trying to change things.

There are only a handful of applications installed compared to Mint and some of the options I use to make them work the way I like are missing. Blowed if I can see what all the fuss is about. It doesn't seem to have any added benefits over Mint KDE 17.3, apart from newer versions of applications.

I'm totally underwhelmed and it really makes me appreciate the quality and polish that has gone into Mint. I want to see what happens when I add the KDE Neon desktop to it, that Jonathan Riddell made when he left Kubuntu. If it doesn't work, then I don't think it will be on my laptop very long.

I just installed Kubuntu in a VM and while working on setting a new desktop picture from my holiday pictures, stored in my host, Plasma crashed. I have been using Open Suse Leap in a VM for 2 weeks and nothing, really absolutely nothing, crashed. I use Kubuntu for 5 minutes and Plasma crashes.

I do like Plasma 5, the way it looks, the way it works (when it works, Kubuntu) so yes, I also hope Mint will do some extra work to make it better than Kubuntu did.

Update (for those few that care): The live DVD of Lubuntu PPC runs without issue on my iMac G4. It's somewhat slow, but that's expected for a single-core 1 GHz processor with only 768 Mb of RAM, not to mention it's running off the live DVD. It didn't recognize my old TrendNet USB WiFi stick out of the box, but that's not particularly important as I can run Ethernet to it if desired.

It's nice to know that if I really wanted to, I could run the latest Firefox on the machine. (As it is, I think I'll just leave OS X Leopard on it, as it's more of a "museum piece" and not my primary workstation.)
