how do i change the Swappiness value in linux mint 18 64bit

In short:
Open the file /etc/sysctl.conf with elevated rights. As we now have in LM 18 the x-apps, there is really no need to install another text-editor for that. Press alt-F2 and enter:

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/sysctl.conf
Add the following line:

Code: Select all

vm.swappiness=10
Another question is, if this is really needed; on a rather current hardware with rather conventional use this is rather unlikely.

Yeah i forgot the link suggests leafpad, and out of habit i still use gedit:P

I am sure, that there are some questionable (at best) advises. But this has already been discussed some time back, no need to repeat this now.
