killer wireless-ac 1535 not working correctly [Solved]

Post by seanrsolutions »

So after some excitement for linux mint 18 I decided to try it out. I waited for 18 because of the new kernel since my laptops wireless card required the new kernel. So once installing mint the wireless card was picked up.

However.... the network manager always shows 1 ap which is very far away but never mine.... or it will display a message wireless unavailable. At first I was thinking it was a driver issue until I saw it actually list a network in my neighborhood. So knowing that it works but the fact that it's picking up only one wireless router vs the approx 13 choices it offers on the other pc's in my house I'm at a place where I have no idea the next step. I also looked at dmesg (which I assume is log messages for drivers being loaded) and I have found this.

dmesg | grep ath10k

I am assuming there lies the problem. Can anyone confirm this? Any advise on next steps would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to get this working. If not I will just have to buy another wireless card for my laptop. Using windows any longer is not an option. I really miss linux!!!

There is a new way to install firmware and it includes one file you are missing

Code: Select all

wget http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-firmware/linux-firmware_1.158_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware_1.158_all.deb

Is there a way to reload the drivers without rebooting the system? Or must I reboot the system in order for the changes to take effect?
bin_bash

This solution provided by JeremyB might solve my problem as well, however in order for the command to work it requires
a working internet connection, which means I will have to take my laptop somewhere to access a wired connection.
My home network is wifi only.

Jeremy!!!! You are a life saver!!! That did fix it. I was on a liveusb working with it however I decided to clone the hdd and install mint to try your solution. After a restart everything works perfectly!! Thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate it.

On a computer with internet download http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/m ... 58_all.deb
Put the file on a thumb drive or whatever, transfer it to the Linux Mint computer and double click on the file and it should install using the GDebi program

Can you post the result of

Code: Select all

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net
Another thread of yours made me think that you have a different chipset for wiif
