Valve still hasn't fixed the launcher issue? Try the following and report back if it works:

Code: Select all

find $HOME/.steam/root/ubuntu12_32/steam-runtime/*/usr/lib/ -name "libstdc++.so.6" -exec mv "{}" "{}.bak" \; -print
per this thread. edit: for your reference, see that thread as it has updated the line for ubuntu 16.10. I've got a funny feeling we're going to need this updated line for LM ~18.2ish.

Here's what I personally did to solve this, but the above should work.
Great . It worked wit the single command you built for it. Thank you!!

I got a steam update just recently and the bad .so.6 files are back again. Thankfully the code above still works (again) so this will probably be an ongoing process.

Gaben, please! :lol:

Are you getting the same error in post 1? type steam in terminal to find out.

Sounds weird. I suggest purging steam and then reinstalling the deb from the main steam site instead.

Hello,

I tried to install from software manager and it crashes after the update. Applied the above, no change. Tried to launch it from terminal and it say "usr/bin/steam no such file".

I tried to install with the latest.deb from Steam website, applied the above and still not working. After having an error "cef_extension.pak", which I fixed, I get the below and still can't launch steam. Any ideas ?

Thanks

steam

Bad idea. Purge steam again, ensure the mesa drivers are updated (check the mint updater to see the hidden level 4 and 5 updates) and then reinstall steam.

Ok purged, installed mesa driver, nvidia driver 367.57, re-installed from Synaptic.
First launched from menu update, extract install then crash
Rename library
Launch from terminal and have the cef_extension.pak error

I've never bought nVidia so I wouldn't know. However, someone at the github thread suggested to add the following to your .bashrc file which I thought was pretty clever:

Code: Select all

NVIDIA_VERSION='nvidia-settings -q NvidiaDriverVersion | grep -oP "[0-9]{3}" | sed -n 1p'
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/lib32/nvidia-$NVIDIA_VERSION:/usr/lib/nvidia-$NVIDIA_VERSION"
That way, each time your nVidia drivers are updated, these library dependencies are always pointed at the correct directory when you run elf binaries like steam. You might have another issue, is ia32-libs installed?

Yes IA32 installed.
Made the change on .bashscr to test. Still same error could not load cef_extensions.pak, which is actually not present in the folders.

Sounds wierd alright, I have both Mint 17 & 18 installed and I noticed that Mint 18 has a ~/.steam directory but not a ~/.local/share/Steam directory, while my Mint17 has both. Are you running Mint 17, or did you upgrade from 17.x to 18?

I would suggest doing what ostracized suggested again and purge steam but then also remove both ~/.steam and ~/.local/share/Steam directories and double check after removing them (in-case your permissions are off). Then reinstall steam and use ostracized's first fix.

Btw for those of you testing on 18.1, I had to use the fix twice, but it's still the same fix (at least in mate.) I decided to skip the Ubuntu repo this time and just download the latest deb from the steam site. After gdebi finishes installing, open a terminal and use the fix immediately, then (still in terminal) do steam -> wait for the ~250MB updates to finish and then see resulting errors (this time it had something to with "can't find radeonsi_dri.so") -> give it at least 30 seconds to confirm it's hanging and then do a ctrl+c to break -> use the fix again, then you're finished and can run normally.

(I'd highly recommend using the terminal to see the actual errors during the installation, otherwise if you start double-clicking the steam icon, you're going to have a bunch of hanging bash threads in the process manager that a. don't provide any error details and b. need to be manually killed.)

You almost need a full-blown tutorial just to install steam now :lol: :lol:
