Poll: What's Mint KDE 18 like? Please click!
OK, my first ever poll - like, ever!
Still waiting on the restoration/customization of my olde netbook and so have no machine to test Mint KDE 18 on… and my workload is massive overtime city. So I interesting how Plasma 5 has shaped up in Mint 18. Hence a poll but, of course, all comments welcome. I would like to know what to expect when I finally get to run up Mint 18. (Looks like being a long time…)
Please click! Thanks! Please note that I am ONLY talking Mint 18 KDE - not any other DE nor any distro other than Mint.

Tried two installations of Mint 18 KDE so far. While it looked pretty nice, I had multiple crashes of the compositor in both installations. Most notably it would crash every time I opened MintUpdate. I have a pretty generic setup on this desktop: Intel Core i5, Intel HD Graphics 4600, 8GB RAM. Never had a crash when running Mint 17.3 KDE.
Mint Cinnamon 20.1

I find it a good effort, but unfortunately hindered by not using a more recent version of plasma. I wonder if I should add the neon stable repository to Mint KDE. But, available time is lacking, and Neon and Maui already provide quite usable and up to date distributions.
Mint KDE's strength has always been stability. Did they unnecessarily sacrifice too many improvements for a perceived increase stability?

Not suitable for a computer with a single core Atom processor and 1GB of RAM (or even 2GB RAM).

Re: Poll: What's Mint KDE 18 like? Please click!
There have been a few hiccups, I've had the system freeze up twice and the wireless not remembering the password (which I was able to fix by deleting the network).
At first I was kinda skeptical about the new "flat" look, but I'm actually kinda growing fond of it.
Overall, I'm liking it despite the occasional problem.
If stability is your main concern, I'd say wait.

After first great impression on the dark theme and 1 week of use, I went back to Mate.

Runs great on my Asus 1015E netbook. A few plasma hiccups but not enough to be annoying ctrl-alt-backspace restarts X (as it traditionally did)

Re: Poll: What's Mint KDE 18 like? Please click!
I've found Mint's approach to Plasma 5 better for me than Kubuntu 16.04. Mint 18 KDE is faster and more stable. I don't know what is different, but it works and that's enough for me.

Have had a few crashes so far, but overall awesome desktop enviorment. -mcintyrelr20

Why do we have to bother about stability, if "a few" crashes are "awesome"?mcintyrelr20 wrote:Have had a few crashes so far, but overall awesome desktop enviorment. -mcintyrelr20

Tell that to Kanjiklub.
Re: Poll: What's Mint KDE 18 like? Please click!
The crashes may have happened since i was using a 2008 hp laptop that has a 32 bit operating system, but do not know if that is the cause of the crashes. How is the 64 bit Linux mint 18 kde operating system?
Re: Poll: What's Mint KDE 18 like? Please click!
Did not fit my needs. Actually taking Mint 18 xfce for a spin now, instead; though I still have 17.3 KDE on my machine.
Try politeness; people will like you for it.

To be fair, here. I don't think that's exactly what was being said.Cosmo. wrote:Why do we have to bother about stability, if "a few" crashes are "awesome"?mcintyrelr20 wrote:Have had a few crashes so far, but overall awesome desktop enviorment. -mcintyrelr20

I did here something, what I extremely seldom do: a full quote. Nothing left out. I read there as user experience: few crashes (nothing else gets mentioned) and the judgment: awesome. Impossible for me to come to another reaction.

I started writing an explanation of how I read the statement but then realized, "What's the point? It'll only become an argument" and my work is killing me. Too tired for a fight.Cosmo. wrote:I did here something, what I extremely seldom do: a full quote. Nothing left out. I read it differently but what the heck?
