Uploading a screenshot, image, or images to this forum

Post by phd21 »

Hi Everyone,

I thought I created a tutorial for this before, but I cannot seem to find it. I was asked by another forum member to provide instructions on how to upload a screenshot, or image, or images, to this forum. So, here they are:

This forum currently has a very small image size that is allowed to be uploaded, less then 98kb, which is far smaller than a typical screenshot (printscreen). It used to be around 740kb. I have asked them to change this many times, as others have I am sure, but they are either unwilling or unable to do so?

It is not that hard to get an image, or images, into this forum even with the extremely small upload image size limit. Here are a some ways:

Note: You can right click an image in the forum and open it in a new browser tab to see it as a larger image, once in a new tab, you can also click that image to enlarge it or shrink it. You could just click the image in the forum as well, but then you would have to click your browser's back button to see the forum post again.

1.) Use an image hosting website to easily upload your image(s) to that, where you get a web link (url address) for an image. On "postimages.org", if you upload a single image, a list of image location web addresses (urls) are automatically listed, (if you upload multiple images at one time, you can click the "share" button on each image to see that image's location web addresses list), then click the button at the far right of "Direct Link" to copy the image's location link, which you then paste back into your forum post or reply using the "rimg" button (remote image button), located on top at the upper right. Position your cursor in your message where you want the image, click the "rimg" button in toolbar of forum message, then right click & paste your image's web link (url), or paste the image's web link, then highlight the link, and then click the "rimg" button. After saving your post or reply, the image(s) will appear.

This has the advantage of not having to edit the image to shrink it (scale or resize), and to save the image(s) into a compressed image format like "jpeg" or "jpg". There are numerous free image hosting websites, like: postimages.org, imgur, tinypic, etc... I would recommend that you create a free account on one of these websites, so that your images are retained and are known to be yours rather then being "generic". I use "postimages.org" the most.

PostImages.org - showing the various location links available for an image

* Apparently "postimage.org" became "postimages.org", so a lot of my previous links to images in all my posts and replies have been broken (the location of the images changed).

In the code box below is an example of how your remote image link should look like when posting or replying in this forum.

Postimage.org — free image hosting / image upload
https://postimages.org/

Code: Select all

[rimg]https://s5.postimg.cc/dvn0g5jif/Post_Image_1.jpg[/rimg]
Image

These methods below require you to edit the images until their sizes are below 98kb in size which can then be uploaded directly into the forum as attachment files. You are limited to 3 images using this method. I will usually have my file manager open and in my "Pictures/ScreenShots" folder, so that I can click the file manager and quickly verify that the images are below 98 kb in size. Once you have done this, it becomes relatively easy to do from then on.

2.) You can install and use the superb "Converseen" image program in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM). This image program can easily and quickly edit one or more images at one time.

Converseen's website
http://converseen.fasterland.net/download-for-linux/
To install this using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install converseen

Bring up "Converseen", click add images in toolbar, file browse to select your images, click "check all" to process all images, now on the left side, Under "Dimensions", check "Scale", click "maintain aspect ratio", change the width or height ratio to something like 80%, click tab button and the other will change automatically to that 80% size, under output options check "Image's Directory" & check "Rename", then on the lower right click "Convert to" and choose "JPG", then click the "Images Settings" button, change the "Jpeg" Compression level to 50% quality, click ok in that box, then click the "Convert" button at the top, and it will quickly convert those images to smaller images that you can upload directly to the forum. Using the settings I mentioned, the smaller converted images will have the word "copy" in it. The "Convert To" and image compression values will stay the same even after closing the program for the next time you use it, but you will probably have to simply change the other values each time you run it.

3.) Install and use one of the many image editors, like Gimp, or KolourPaint, Pinta, etc... I find that the excellent "Kolourpaint" application is the easiest and fasted basic image editor. In addition to making it easy to resize and re-scale an image, these programs also allow you to edit the image to highlight areas of interest, add text overlays, etc..., and to save them, or export them, easily into the ".jpg" or ".jpeg" compressed image format using around 50% quality or 50% compression which can then be upload easily to the forum.

Using "KolourPaint" to shrink an image to fit this forum: Bring up "KolourPaint", click open to select an image, then click "image" in the toolbar, click "Resize/Scale", click "Smooth Scale", click "Keep Aspect Ratio", change Width or Height "Percentage" to 80% or less, click "File" in toolbar, "Export", change "Filter" to "Jpeg Image", change "Quality" to 50%-60%, type in an image name with the correct extension type, like "image.jpg" or "image.jpeg" (auto), then click "Save". Check your new image's file size using your file manager to see that it is below 98kb to upload to the forum. If it is not, you can click on "KolourPaint", click "File", "Export", lower the "Quality" a little more, and save it again until it is small enough for the forum. If you have a really large image, you can also reduce the "Smooth Scale" percentage, under Image - Resize Scale options, to something lower than 80% before exporting it.

Hi phd21,
Thanks for the link to the tutorial on pasting images in the forum.
The program "Converseen" appealed, so I've run Software Manager & Synaptic but can't find any reference to this program.
So how do I get it?

I re-saved your first image at 50 (jpeg quality) with GIMP and it got bigger. (125kb -> 137kb).

A couple of notes:
- some images - like text on a plain background - are smaller (file size) in GIF than in JPEG or PNG, and preserve their detail better. **

- crop out the parts you don't need. (like the right-side of the first image, which is just background).

Good old "irfanview" has a "Save for web" plugin where you can define the output size of a jpeg (or gif or png) image and preview what it looks like before saving it. (Saving that first 125kb image as 95kb made it a bit hard to read).
But you need 'wine' for irfanview; apparently gimp doesn't have that capability, but there might be some other linux program that'll let you define the file size and preview the compression before saving.
xnview, perhaps?

** 20.3kb gif image (click to embiggen):
text.gif
Compare to 19.9kb jpg image:
text.jpg
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Hi "Silver Surfer",

You are most welcome.

The great program "Converseen" has always been in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) before. Are you saying that in Linux Mint 18 when you click the search button in the Synaptic Packager manager and type in "converseen", that it does not show up?

Then, try this method below:
Converseen's website
http://converseen.fasterland.net/download-for-linux/
To install this using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntuhandbook1/apps
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install converseen

Hope this helps ...

Hi Everyone,

It is nice to see some good feedback on this.

There are numerous good to excellent image and photo applications available in Linux and some are "cross-platform", meaning they will work on other operating systems. Some can edit one or more images as well as view or catalog them. I will bring up another one below.

User "Flemur" brought up a very good point regarding posting images. Let me expand on that. Often, it is not necessary to post an entire desktop screen shot. Many of the screen shot (print screen) programs will allow you the user to select a region like a rectangle, or a particular window, rather than the whole desktop which might then be small enough to upload directly into this forum without any editing at all. And, there are various image formats, including ".gif", that might produce a smaller file than a "jpg". And, using the various methods (techniques) described to shrink (resize or scale) an image, and or to save an image(s) into a compressed image format with high compression (equals lower quality), usually makes the image(s) less clear, sometimes the image after editing is so bad it is not legible (readable), or usable. The methods I have described work really well, but you may have to experiment with the application settings with certain images to see which settings produce the best results for you.

And, if you take a little time to learn one or more of the image and photo editing programs, you can easily edit a larger image to select just the relevant portion of that image (called "crop" or "cropping") and then save, or export, that portion of the image, which might also be small enough to upload directly into this forum without any further image editing.

Another excellent image application is called "XnViewMP", and it can also easily convert and or resize (scale) images and more. Kinda like "Irfanview" from MS Windows.

XnViewMP - Information and download links
- Towards the bottom on the right hand side of this webpage are the Linux download and installation files. Click either the 32-bit or 64-bit ".deb" link to download the file for your system. You just double click the downloaded file to install it, if it does not start installing automatically.
http://www.xnview.com/en/xnviewmp/

When you first run XnViewMP, just hit enter on the initial screen. This program does a lot, and shows a lot, and some people are intimidated by the main screen. If you make it full screen, it is less "busy" looking. Any user can configure the main screen to be as simple or as complex as they can handle. Try out the various "View" options. You can also change the size of the various display window boxes on this screen, by letting your cursor drift over the edge of one of the boxes until you see a double arrow, click and hold your mouse button to resize it.

To use XnViewMP, bring it up, make it full screen, Browse to your folder of Images on the left side, on the right side you will see the images in that folder, click one image, or select all of them, then you have at least two choices:

Click Tools, Export, check auto-refresh, pick an output format, like "jpg", then adjust quality (see screenshot below), you get to see the resulting image size, when small enough, the click export, when finished, click the "X" in upper right.

Image

or

Click Tools, "Batch Convert", select output folder and image type like "jpg", click Settings, under format type, adjust quality to something like say 36%, click ok, then click "Convert", when finished, click the "X" in upper right.
Image

Now, here is a really cool and great feature of XnViewMP, during this batch conversion process, you can do much more. Let's say you keep the "jpg" quality around 60% or higher for better clarity, but you want to resize the image(s) as well during the batch conversion to make them small enough to fit the forum image size requirements, then click the "Actions" tab, click "Add Action", select "Image", "Resize", then change "pixels" to percent and change the width and height values to 80%, check Keep Ratio, click "Convert", when finished, click the "X" in upper right. You could of course keep the "Pixels" setting, and specify an image size like 1024x768, or some other image size that is smaller than the original.

In GIMP, when you export an image you can select the "Preview" checkbox and then it will show you the target file size. Adjusting the slider (or entering a percentage) also updates this, so you can set it just below the ~98KB file size threshold. Hope this helps :)

Very useful .

Thanks for your post phd21 as <100kb screenshots are often unreadable.

Just saying that if the button saying rimg had a more useful help line text (set in the admin panel), users might have more of an idea what the rimg button actually did.

Thanks BG405,

I do use Gimp regularly outside Linux, so I might revert to this option.
However, I am getting some help from austin.texas as to why I am not getting access to converseen.
It is all useful knowledge, for someone embarking on new territory such as Linux late in life. My annoyance at M$ and the way it is going, will drive me on!

I really don't know why you would get different results. You will notice that I got the information on converseen without doing sudo apt-get update, and without an internet connection.
To see if you get different results, you can first run:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI

Hi austin.texas,
I ran your apt-get update, which downloaded 8x A4 pages of something (too large for the forum) with ref to many large files, but is probably what is needed to make everything work. However, as I have said before, I am running Linux on a pendrive. I assume, therefore, it does everything within the pendrive, but as it is only 8Gb, I suspect there is not enough spare memory space to process everything it tries to do.
I think I am going to have to bite the bullet, wipe one of my older laptops, and install Linuxmint Sarah as it's only OS.
In the meantime, thanks for all your help, and although I've not actually achieved anything, I have still learned a lot about Linux to take the plunge.

Hi "Silver Surfer",

If you are running Linux Mint on an 8gb USB flash drive stick with the Live "test drive" demo installation version of Linux Mint that you downloaded, then that could be why you are having problems installing software and perhaps other issues; This version will not retain any customizations, downloads, or installed software, and once you restart your computer, that all disappears. You must fully install Linux Mint to a hard drive (typical normal install), or to another flash drive stick of at least 16gb or larger to be secure, to store customizations, keep newly installed applications (software) (like Converseen), save downloads, etc..

You could also create a USB flash drive stick with what is called "Persistence" using the downloaded Live demo test drive installation version of Linux Mint, and that will retain customizations, installing software, etc... But, that "Persistence" method of installing Linux Mint to a USB stick does not provide the security of a fully installed Linux Mint, but would work on an 8gb flash drive stick, and has the added benefit of allowing you to install Linux Mint onto other computers. If this interests you, let us know, because there are numerous posts in this forum on creating and using Linux Mint on a USB flash drive stick with "persistence", just search for "persistence", or ask, and we can provide information and links on this.

Hope this helps ...

Thanks phd21, for all the info.
At least the pendrive has given me an insight into Linux, enough to want to pursue using it. I suspected the USB drive would have limited use.
I have an "old" Acer laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium, and as I have a more modern Asus running Windows 10, I think I could ditch the Windows Vista and install Linux on it to it's full advantage. May just backup the Windows Vista installation onto a large external hard drive I have, although I gather Vista Home Premium doesn't have a built in facility for doing this.

Thanks once again phd21. Will pick your brains ref Kdenlive at a later date. Want to explore that a lot further!

Hi "Silver Surfer",

You are welcome.

A fully installed Linux Mint works just as well on a USB flash drive stick as it does on a hard drive, except a little slower. I always have a fully installed Linux Mint on a flash drive stick (16gb or larger) as a portable version of Linux Mint and as a backup for emergencies, like a hard drive or other hardware failure, etc...

If the old acer laptop has 2gb or more of system memory (Ram), you should be able to easily run Linux Mint on it.

I'll be happy to help you with any questions regarding the excellent "Kdenlive" video editor, just start another post, or PM me. There are a few good posts already in this forum on "Kdenlive", and there are numerous tutorials on their website, on YouTube, & elsewhere.

Have a great day or night or both.
