After installing Nvidia drivers - Black Screen & Freezing

Postby keadaada » Sun Oct 30, 2016 7:05 pm

Hello everybody!
Firstly I been trying to solve this problem with using other distro's such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu and now Linux Mint, it is clearly a hardware problem related to the GPU.

Setup: Two SSD:s and different operative systems, Windows 10 and Linux Mint.
Linux Mint is encrypted through dm-crypt, I did it through the installer.

Problem: After installing Nvidia drivers I am presented with a frozen screen when trying to enter the password and when trying to use nomodeset I have a black screen and cannot access CTRL+ALT+F1-F10.
If I do not install Nvidia drivers I have no problem at all and no freezes nor black screens.

I have been trying to install Nvidia proprietary drivers and following several guides without any help to solve this issue.
The 'Driver Manager' in Linux Mint recommends me to install Nvidia 361.42, which I have done and resulted in a freeze and when using nomodeset, nvidia.modeset=0, grub_gfxmode=1280x1024x24 I have a black screen and cannot get the CLI to work.

Truly I have no clue what to do and I am even wondering if Linux is for me, I been trying for hours to fix this and only getting angry with myself.

I tried all these below

We will need to know your system info and graphics hardware before anyone can help troubleshoot . . :?
Please use the following terminal command, and copy/paste the complete output back here in a reply. :)

OK, try this:

1. Upgrade your kernel. Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels. Install the latest kernel from the 4.4 series.

2. Reboot.

3. Launch Driver Manager and install the nvidia-367 driver (which replaces the nvidia-361).

4. Reboot.

Does that help?

Did all the steps but on step 3 I can only see nvidia-361.

The latest Linux kernel is installed which is> 4.4.0-45

OK, then use the reliable graphics-drivers PPA for installing the nvidia-367:

I have followed this guide before and as a result I gotten the black screen.
I will lay down all my steps before I do it and wait for confirmation from you or a other user so, that I am following these steps correctly.

1. Check for drivers that I can install *367* is the version that is longer supported and stable.
2. sudo apt-get purge nvidia*
3. Enter password
4. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers
5. sudo apt-get update
6. sudo apt-get install nvidia-367
7. Reboot

Is all these steps correct way I should proceed? What if I the same problems happens *black screen*?
Thanks so far guys!

That's strange, because Nvidia itself states that the nvidia-367 supports your GeForce GTX 970 graphics card:
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverRe ... 8586/en-us
(click on the tab "supported products")

Can you still boot into a graphical desktop, by means of Recovery mode (it's under "Advanced options" in the Grub bootloader menu)?

You misunderstood, this happened before and I followed the guide then. I am on a fresh install now :)
I described the steps to ensure that everything I did was correct because I am going to do them soon, I suppose the steps I described are correct and nothing I should differently?

Yeah like you stated it is supported:

'GeForce 900 Series:

GeForce GTX TITAN X, GeForce GTX 980 Ti, GeForce GTX 980, GeForce GTX 970, GeForce GTX 960, GeForce GTX 950'

Well, you might also try the nvidia-370, which is also in the graphics-drivers PPA and which (according to Nvidia) also supports your graphics card: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverRe ... 7408/en-us

So I should change step 6 to this?

6. sudo apt-get install nvidia-370

Correct?

EDIT:

WIll try and follow the steps in a few hours and report back, I am going afk soon.

After the installation and the reboot, choose the normal Linux Mint and when I need to enter the password keyboard is froozen and the screen.
Once I restart and try using nomodeset..and later F10 the screen goes black and I cannot do anything. CTRL+ALT+F1-F10 does not work either.

Now I am inside recovery mode...what should I do?

Try to boot "normally"; it's one of the options in the recovery menu. It's not quite a normal boot, because certain failsafe settings are being used.

Wrong. Boot into recovery mode, and then select it *from the recovery menu*.

So I tried this following:

-> Boot PC -> GRUB -> Linux Mint GRUB *not going, Advanced Options* -> PC freezes upon the PC requests my password for decryption.
-> Boot PC -> GRUB -> Advanced Options -> Choosing Linux Generic -> Black screen
-> Boot PC -> GRUB -> Advanced Options -> Choosing Linux Generic (upstart) -> Black screen
-> Boot PC -> GRUB -> Advanced Options -> Choosing Linux Generic Recovery Mode-> Works fine

All options are tried under GRUB, just recovery mode works...

My dkms status, I am logged inside recovery mode:

ndiswrapper, 1.59, 4.4.0-21-generic, x86_64: installed
ndiswrapper, 1.59, 4.4.0-45-generic, x86_64: installed

I am gonna delete it and take a backup, will edit!

EDIT:

Hmm.... the folder etc/x11/ exists but the file xorg.conf does NOT!
So full pathway: etc/x11/xorg.conf, does not exist *the file*

asdf@a /etc/X11 $ ls
app-defaults rgb.txt Xreset Xsession xsm
default-display-manager xinit Xreset.d Xsession.d
fonts xkb Xresources Xsession.options

this will create a new etc/x11/xorg.conf reboot afterwards

Code: Select all

sudo nvidia-xconfig

if you don't use virtualbox go in synaptic and search virtualbox and completely UNinstall them. it will speedup your boot time

All working fine with xorg.conf but still having the same problem.

I'm having the same problem. I thought it worth mentioning that it's clearly a video issue. After installing the video drivers, and after the frozen password entry screen when you arrive on the black screen where nothing appears responsive, appears to just not be sending anything to the screens, but it's not actually frozen! As a workaround for this black screen, you should be able to just type your decryption key and press enter and (assuming you typed it correctly) you will arrive at your desktop!

It's rather a pain and I'm looking for a fix, but it gets the job done for now.
