Browsers constantly crashing

Post by 1.618 »

So the last week has seen my browsers develop a glitch where they suddenly crash but netstat is showing connections stay open till I manually disable them by shutting down my network card. the programmes no longer show in sytem monitor once the window closes, it happens mostly with palemoon and firefox, i guess as they are open the most but occasionally synaptic and update manager will shut.

running from a terminal i get

Code: Select all

(pale moon:9930): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: Attempt to add property GnomeProgram::show-crash-dialog after class was initialised

A google search has thrown up things like changing my theme, I use dust with mate desktop on mint17 but never had this happen before. I have checked flash and it's the latest version, synaptic also suggested some packages so i have installed those too but it's made no difference

Can anybody interpret the above outputs for me please as It's getting frustrating not being able to do what i need to do online. thanks :)

This is a shot in the dark since I don't understand the technical mumbo-jumbo of those crash reports, but it looks possibly like it's the icedtea plug-in causing your problems. If you don't use it, I'd suggest removing it to see if that fixes your problem.

Thank you, i shall give that a go (fingers crossed)

You wouldn't happen to be using an AMD/ATI graphics card would you?

Afraid this didn't help, it's not exclusively browsers crashing but they are open the most so that's what crashes most usually.

I have been experiencing crashing in Firefox when scrolling pages after the last update.

I can't remember what was in the update; does Mint have a page like Arch does that describes updates?

One thing I would suggest, create a partition as a 50G partition as /. Partition the rest as /Home. IF the system fails, reinstall and use the exact same username and all your 'stuff' comes back to you.

Hmmm...I also notice there is another update for GST after the update I did the other day, with a message of "incomplete fix".

Wonder if that's what's doing it...

thanks
I just update the gstreamer plugins on my pc and when i went to open the browsers, palemoon threw a security error and crashed, firefox just crashed and torbrowser wouldn't even open, after a restart i was priviliged to experience about 10 seconds of internet browsing before my browser crashed again, so we can eliminate the gstreamer plug in by the looks of it

I have also been getting random Firefox crashes when scrolling or just moving my mouse. Mint 17.3 Xfce w FF 50.

It has now been two days since I disabled the icedtea-web-plugin, and NO more crashes. (so far) :-)

Well I also had corrupt ram but that has now been replaced and so far I've managed to download two mint iso's and burn them to disc and write this post with no crashes. \o/ :D it only started crashing recently so I think a recent update must have created a bug which was exagerated by the ram being faulty.

The likeliness of this is <= 0.0 - faulty RAM will cause loaded binaries to become corrupted. When the corrupted binary is processed by the CPU it will crash, freeze or not work as intended. This has nothing to do with updates. When RAM starts to fail it will deteriorate bit by bit until it is completely useless.

the ram has been corrupted for a while, the crashing only started after recent updates, it was more than just faulty ram :)

If replacing the RAM has solved the issue then no, it was not related to updates, but to the faulty RAM.

If the RAM was faulty when downloading and installing the updates, it's possible the integrity of these updates has been compromised during the process. It's like using a scratched DVD to install something; I had weird issues when using a disk which turned out to have a bit of muck on it when I'd burnt the ISO - this did not result in an error message during the recording process. You only need one faulty bit!

I don't have faulty ram. I loaded the fresh updates and so far so good.

I was thinking the same with regards to the whole install, If I downloaded the iso and installed it with bad ram then the same could apply. i have 2 fresh iso made and ready to try, mint 18 and if that doesn't work I have 17 to fall back on as i know it works fine on this box

Ever since I updated to Firefox 50 (and the gstreamer updates), Firefox locks up randomly on me. I've started using Chrome. Something in the recent updates broke video, as it only locks up on pages with videos.
