Wish I could figure out how to stop a avatar from running. Reminds me of many sites now trying to get my attention with Gifs, videos, pop ups.
Lighten up. Adding an avatar probably took me about as long as you took out of your 'real life' to enlighten us with your unsolicited mini rant.

I don't have a real life but I hear him on the GIFs and things that flash at me. I see firefox has some add ons that are supposed to stop them but I'm not sure if they stop the avatars from flashing too.

True animated pics are annoying, but. GIF and a static avatar are completely different.
I don't mind emoticons used in posts though.

I like static avatars for a forum as it brings a better sense of community and a personal feel to it.

GIF's on the other hand are annoying and distracting. Sorry @inkknife

Not a security risk, but a privacy / tracking risk. I made the suggestion to block avatars from not secured connections already half a year ago. Not only would it solve the risk, it would also show those users, who still http-connect their avatar, that they missed something.
I don't see an obvious way how I would implement this. What I did do was update all members that used http for an avatar on imgur.com to use https instead. Anyway, shouldn't you be picking an avatar image

Most people download or create an avatar, and then upload it to a service like imgur.com, and link to it from there. Imgur supports HTTPS and does not require an account.

You can press Escape to stop an animated GIF from running. If a certain avatar keeps annoying you, you can use ad add blocker to block the image and it won't bother you again.

I made my avatar a few years back. I use it on a couple of forums such as this one. I made a few animated avatars and change whenever I get bored with them.

This doesn't work for me. I tried it in both Firefox and Pale Moon.

Cool or annoying?

I'm always in two minds when it comes to animated avatars.

I would upload an avatar if I could upload it directly here like I can other forums. I don't like having to jump through so many hoops.

What are the "hoops" that get an Avatar up? I might be willing if I knew how.

You may find the "hoops" or simply the steps of how to enable an avatar for your forum user account here (illustrated step by step instruction):
how do i export my picture file to the avatar?
