Intel h170 chipset not recognized during installation attempt?

Post by elmarts »

I'm trying to install 64 bit mint 18 on a new machine with an intel h170 chipset mobo (Asrock H170M Pro4). Booting from the 64 bit DVD (I burned the iso to the dvd), I get an error message saying the chipset is not recognized. I do get a couple of TTY type prompt screens and also the "dots" display as it tries to load, but then all goes black and just sits there. 64 bit windows 7 installed fine. Ideas? - Elmar

Are you trying for a dual install or overwrite Windows by Mint?
For either, please backup your Windows data and follow the process
Verify the integrity o the iso.
https://linuxmint.com/verify.php
Check the media too when you boot as you get the option to check it.

Install process

For a single Mint system without Windows please use this.

Great! thanks for the hunt effort. I'm a newbie in this as you might have guessed :) Now to work through the windows stuff to get this done. I'll post results ... btw, my signature shows that I used to have a 32 bit installation, but that vanished with this machine hardware upgrade.

OK - I tried again with my known good 32 bit mint DVD - and got the same error: Unknown chipset 1360001. so it's not the ISO, it's the actual OS. Am I doomed?

I have Asus H170I and LM 17.3 and 18 work perfectly. You may need a BIOS update.

I did the UEFI BIOS UPdate - no change in the liveCD behavior (black screen and no activity).

And failure in the same way - unknown chipset from 17.3, 18 and 18.1; ah well - mobo is too bleeding edge for the current crop of Linux's,I guess.

Southbridge Intel H170 rev. 31

Now to attempt to rescue my other machine whose 32 bit Mint seems to have flaked out -

I don't have that motherboard, mine is listed in my signature. I just looked up yours and found those links.

I have seen that fedora tends to be on the bleeding edge, so they might support that chipset with a newer linux kernel. Most drivers are built into the kernel, so newer kernels are most likely to support newer hardware.

So if I want to stay with Mint (which I really like btw), I will need to wait for version 19, which should have an updated kernal?

Version 18.1 can be downloaded. May be using same kernel as version 18.I am not sure.

No, both Linux MInt 17.3 & 18 support the Intel H170/Z170 chipset. There is something wrong with your mobo or BIOS.
