Linux Mint on Chromebook?

Post by Flyboy 70TC »

Hello All,
I am a complete neophyte on Linux.
I have a Chromebook that's about 3 years old and would like to put LInux Mint on it as the OS.
I have it on an Acer laptop that had Windows 8 on it and really like it.
Thanks for any help you can give.

I may not be any help but!!!
I have looked at a couple of chrome books for switching or dual booting to Linux.
The only problem that I found was getting into the bios to load a "LIVE" flash drive.
Can you find out how much RAM and how much space your "C:" drive is. LM can load into as little as 9-20 GIG. Windex does not like less than 64 GIG.
If one or both combined is over the amount available, it will probably not work. Remember many files can be saved on a flash drive.

Asus Eee PC 1001PX LM18 Cinnamon 64, Acer Aspire 4730Z LM17.3 Cinnamon 64,
Toshiba Satellite U205 Windex XP/LM18 Cinnamon 64, Toshiba Satellite L305 LM17.3 Cinnamon 64,
Toshiba Satellite L505 LM17.3 Cinnamon 64, Dell Opto 990 LM17.3 Cinnamon 64,
Dell Vostro 1000 LM18 Cinnamon 64, HP dv2000 LM17.3 Cinnamon 64
Old handbuilt pre SATA with Atom processor 2 gig ram LM 17.0 ver2 32 bit,
Sony Vaio VGN-CS215J LM18 Cinnamon 64.
Acer aspire 5532 dual boot Win8/LM18 Cinnamon 64 with single core Athlon.

I am no expert, but I am running Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) in 'dual-boot' mode on some Acer Chromebooks -- both internally on a replaced 128gb SSD, and now recently also on a USB3 Sandisk mini thumbdrive.

It is also possible to run a few flavors of Linux in parallel with a running ChromeOS session via 'crouton'. However, Linux Mint is currently not one of those available choices -- so my alternative was to install Debian Jessie, and install a Cinnamon desktop to make it look much like my normal LMDE installs.

Some folks completely remove ChromeOS and install whatever Linux they want -- I have not done this myself.

Depending on what your questions might be, I might be able to offer more info. I do have a webpage that explains (in fairly gory detail) how I have been doing the dual-boot/crouton installs that I desire :)

It will work on some, not on others.
First question, is it an Intel based chromebook?
Don't think it can be done on an ARM.

I have Mint running on an Acer C720 chromebook, no dual boot, I removed Chrome entirely.

If you have ARM type CPU, use the ARM capable Linux Mint version

Note the warning about data loss and backup first before doing this.

Using Linux Mint installed to SD drive on Chromebook

I personally would probably prefer the USB or SD card installation approach.

There is an Unbuntu MATE available if you want something a bit more uptown than XFCE desktop.

I'd also do a search for "ubuntu <your chromebook's exact model name>".

For MInt 18.x ubuntu 14.04 is relevant, for mint 17.x ubuntu 14.04 is. Older and newer references won't necessarily apply to your version.

Well my Acer C710 is near END OF LIFE (Oct 2017), and of course you can not download or make a Flash Drive with Mint on a CB, Nor does THIS MacMini I am on have a CD/DVD Drive, and even though I did install Mint on my OLD, Now retired Windows XP desktop, blowing XP away, I have no idea how difficult it would be to do using the MAC. So I am considering buying (Is very reasonably priced) an already Mint 18 loaded Flash Drive from Amazon, AND I also would want to completely delete the ChromeOS, installing just Mint, after the EOL, if the CB becomes useless to me. Could you share the steps to do that with my CB, how to get into BIOs to boot up from that purchased Flash Drive, etc. I have an Acer C710-2487 that does not have their wimpy 16G SSD, but rather a 320G HD, so has plenty of space. TIA for any info. OK to message me such steps if you want>>>TIA
