NVIDIA X Server Settings does not see PRIME Profiles

Post by khomkovm »

Why in Linux Mint 18.1 NVIDIA X Server Settings does not see PRIME Profiles?
I cant switch between NVIDIA and intel mode!

In LM 18 such a problem in my laptop was absent.

An empty NVIDIA X Server Settings indicates there was a problem with the Nvidia driver installation. Use these commands in the Terminal and post the output:

Code: Select all

1. dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia
2. xed /var/log/gpu-manager.log
3. dmesg | egrep -i "bbswitch|nvidia"
4. ls /etc/modprobe.d
5. ls /etc/X11
6. ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/char/drm/
7. inxi -Fxz

Re: NVIDIA X Server Settings does not see PRIME Profiles

Post by roblm »

It appears that the Nvidia driver installation was OK but there is a problem in it's configuration, so it's not being enabled. That also produces an empty NVIDIA X Server Settings. Would you post the Xorg.0.log file. Open the System Log in the menu to view it. Press Ctrl+A to select the entire file contents. Right click on the screen and select “Copy”. Don't save it to a file. Open the Mint Forum reply window and select “Code” in the menu. Press Ctrl+V to paste the lines between the two code words.

If you have problems posting that long file, then upload it to pastebin.com by using this command:

Code: Select all

pastebin /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window.

Then use this command in the Terminal to create a nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf file:

Code: Select all

gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf
In the opened empty file, add these lines:

Code: Select all

blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0
Save the file. Then in the Terminal type this command:

Code: Select all

sudo update-initramfs -u
Reboot. Check for NVIDIA X Server Settings.

I don't understand where the nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf file came from. Here is the contents of the /etc/modprobe.d folder, which you posted in a previous post. There was no nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf file listed:
ltgr@ltgr-Lenovo-V580c ~ $ ls /etc/modprobe.d
alsa-base.conf blacklist-watchdog.conf
blacklist-ath_pci.conf bumblebee.conf
blacklist-bcm43.conf dkms.conf

The output from inxi -Fxz showed the nouveau driver was enabled, not Nvidia. However, the Xorg.0.log file you posted showed the Nvidia driver was now enabled. It looks like you made the switch from the Intel GPU to the Nvidia GPU. What did you do?
Or perhaps you never rebooted after installing the Nvidia driver?

Re: NVIDIA X Server Settings does not see PRIME Profiles

Post by khomkovm »

I dont no! After I had found absence of Prime Profiles I had added ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa and installed new Nvidia driver then rebooted. But it hadn't helped.
Then I had installed all the packages with name "Prime" and "Bumblbee" in the Synaptic and it too hadnt helped.
After I had carried out all your instructions and rebooted. Prime Profiles has appeared.

Roblm? Still here? Or anyone as good as him...
Hi! I'm desperate. I definitely have the same problem of driver but since I am a newbee and I don't want to break everything (once a again).
May I post here the answers of the commands? (basically a lot of points in common but I want to be sure that I have to do the same procedure....)
Thanks anyone!

@Oirs

Your card is a 740M. I believe the 700 series falls under legacy support now. You may need to install the legacy 304 drivers from the driver manager.
