Software Manager no longer opening

Post by Pilgrim » Thu Dec 29, 2016 4:05 pm

Hi -

I've been using Mint 17 (Qiana) 64 bit MATE edition for some 18 months now and I suddenly discovered today that the Software Manager is no longer loading. I haven't loaded any new software for quite a while so I don't know when this problem started. I have searched the forums but haven't found any solution yet.

I have tried ...
apt-get purge mintinstall
apt-get install mintinstall

and have tried Fix MergeList in Update Manager but to no avail.

If I run "mintinstall" from a terminal I get a reponse that I don't understand. After entering my password the following appears ...

>Adobe Reader does not need to be run as a privileged user. Please remove 'sudo' from the beginning of the command.
>Vector smash protection is enabled.

Is anyone able to help me understand what is going on here?

Have you disabled policykit on startup? If yes, able policykit. Anyway you should be able to start mintinstall using command

Code: Select all

gksu mintinstall
PS. Do not use sudo mintinstall

Out of an unknown reason OpenJDK gets started, when mintInstall closes. So it seems, that mintInstall gets launched and gets closed immediately.

Create a fresh new user account and make sure, that it belongs to the group sudo. Check the behavior of mintInstall there.

How do I check to see if policykit is disabled on my computer? How to enable if needed? Thanks

I haven't seen any authoritative advice yet, at least not anything clear.

See if the mintinstall-process is running or not.

Code: Select all

(ps -ef|grep -v grep|grep mintinstall >/dev/null && echo ”running” || echo ”not running”)

I post with some trepidation as I've only been using Mint for three weeks.
I had installed Mint 18 and after a few days I hit the Software Manager problem in this (and other) threads.
Mint 18.1 was imminent so I upgraded as soon as it was available, to hopefully cure the problem.
SM worked properly after the upgrade but started to fail again after a couple of days. I hadn't installed much extra software so I uninstalled it all - SM still failed.
SM had worked initially in both Mint 18 and Mint 18.1 but failed after a day or two - the common thing was that I had changed to the Nvidia-340 driver *about* this stage (I hadn't kept strict time records of all actions).
So, I changed back to the Xserver-xorg-video-nouveau driver - I haven't had a problem with SM since changing back (4 days now).

I have this problem for months now. ( yes polkit is running, thanks for the suggestion.) My error message is different from the poster's. I get a crash with
Real-time signal 0

In logs I get: error 4 in libGL.so.304.131, I am using nvidia driver 304.131. I am guessing this problem has something to do with nvidia drivers. Beyond my pay grade.

Linux Mint 17 Qianna Cinnamon

The red 'X' on my update manager automagically disappeared, with no action on my part since I posted.
