Huawei broadband dongle driver suspect.

I have recently upgraded my machines from Linux Mint 17.3 to 18.1. I have a desktop PC and an HP laptop. My internet speed is now dreadfully slow.

I have a Vodaphone Mobile Broadband Bus Enumerator (Huawei) plugged in to a USB port. When I test over Speedtest.net, I get

W10(PC) 68ms 1.45M 2.14Mbps
Mint(PC) 73ms 0.26M 1.95Mbps
Mint(HP) 46ms 1.15M 0.29Mbps


Disallowing the strangeness that download speeds are slower than upload over this device, the download speed on Mint(PC) is far too low. The laptop speeds show download faster than upload, but still not good.

I would appreciate advice on how to gain and publish more information to help resolve the problem.
Even more so, I would appreciate advice on how to solve the problem.

Further details.

I attached the dongle to the laptop. Linux Mint driver there (Broadcomm HP) correctly separated the functions, and treated it as a storage device over USB, while treating it as a WiFi device otherwise. Very respectable upload/download figures were observed.

I can only assume the PC driver is suspect.

You may want to "compare & contrast" the wireless connection drivers and settings of laptop versus desktop system, e.g. by means of ifconfig and hwinfo --network (probably requiring the installation of the hwinfo package in advance) or inxi -Nn.

General comment.

I am not comparing like-for-like here.

The laptop is operating over WiFi, while the PC is operating over USB. It is the PC (USB) hich is displaying slow and inverted operation. (inverted = download slower than upload).

I have installed Bash for Windows to try to mimic ifconfig and hwinfo calls to get comparable data for windows, with no luck.

Is there any way of getting comparable information out of Windows10, does anyone know?

Almost certain this is all down to Vodaphone engineering works.
