Weird problem. Wifi unavailable after reboot.

Post by exploder »

I installed Mint 18.1 Cinnamon on my HP 655 laptop. When I do a cold boot wireless networks show up and the laptop connects automatically to my home network just like it should. The problem is if I reboot the system I get "no wireless networks are available", or something to that effect.

I have been trying to find the exact hardware specs, it is the model with the E1 processor and realtek Ethernet. It would be nice to figure this out. :)

Can you run the command inxi -Fxz from the terminal and copy the output here?

Googling "Ralink RT3290 Wireless unavailable after reboot" turns up may reports of similar sounding issues. One recurring mention is it may go into airplane mode by itself. I think you can check with command rfkill list what current status is. I'd check the output of that command after cold boot (i.e., after power on) and after warm boot (i.e., after reboot).

See the wireless script link in my signature, run it once and post results when it works, then reboot and run

Code: Select all

./wireless-info
Once you connect again post the non working results. Note the name of the results file is wireless-info.txt

Feel free to edit the post with the working script results to include the results when it doesn't work and please use code tags

I would try

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
Shutdown and do a cold boot, then try the reboot

See if it makes things work correctly once again

Can you disable wireless-N mode on the wifi router and see if the problem still exists?

No, it is a Comcast router that has on and off.

You could try

Code: Select all

echo "options rt2800pci nohwcrypt=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rt2800pci.conf
Reboot

It might be worth trying

Code: Select all

systemctl restart NetworkManager.service
when it doesn't work

Gave that a try, it just displayed that I was off-line. Still have network not available.

Any result for

Code: Select all

sudo ifconfig wlo1 up
When it isn't working?

This thread on ubuntuforums is the reason I asked about disabling wireless-N mode

I get

Code: Select all

SIOCSIFFAGS: Input/output error
Edit: It sure looks like that bug to me. The HP 655 does have the latest BIOS and firmware updates though...

Oddly the problem did not exist with Manjaro, however other things were wrong there. The problem only occurs with the Ubuntu 16.04 base, (Mint 18.1). I have tried newer kernels with the same results. The problem also did not occur with Mint 17 using the Ubuntu 14.04 base.

I would have you file a bug report and have Clem upstream it to ubuntu. Your first script results showed an error I thought was related to power management being enabled

Code: Select all

ieee80211 phy0: rt2x00queue_flush_queue: Warning - Queue 2 failed to flush (repeated 6 times)
But the non working results reminded me of chili555's answer on ubuntuforums

Hiya Explorer, hope things are well fellow nixer.

Have you tried another network manager? Only a thought but are plenty of others with or w/o gui frontends. Generally keep network-manager as is on Mint and had no probs, use ceni on Deb Jessie, also no probs.

2 cents.

Between the two, actually prefer ceni. Not hard to work with and as light as you get pretty much but am by no means a Nix wireless networking guru.
