Hello,
I have two physical hard drives on my PC: one 1TB drive where Win7 is installed and one 500GB where Mint 17 is installed. When I start my PC I pick from a boot loader the OS I want to work with.
Next weekend I am going to make a fresh Win7 installation and I guess the boot loader that welcomes me when I start my PC will not appear anymore after the fresh install. How to I install Grub now? From Win7 or maybe from Mint? Can you please describe the step by step process of the easiest way to install Grub ?
Thank you very much

Re: How to install Grub after a fresh OS installation ?
You didn't specify what bootloader (I'm assuming grub) or where's it currently installed (I'm assuming sda, since you said it will be gone) and what partitioning table and bios (I'm assuming msdos since it's win7 not 8 or 10). I have similar setup, only I have 3x linux on sdb and win7 on sda. I've set my bios to boot sdb first, and that's where I have installed grub. This gives me access to every system through grub menu and making changes or win updates don't mess anything. Just to give you one option. Installing or fixing Grub can be done with various live-images.

If grub is currently installed on the Mint drive, and you take care of disconnecting that drive during the windows install, then grub will still be there and will still boot Mint. To make it also able to boot the new windows, you will probably need to run
If grub is currently installed on the windows drive, then you will indeed need to reinstall it, with procedure following grumpy_geek's links.
sudo update-grub
from Mint (after install and with the windows drive connected obviously). If grub is currently installed on the windows drive, then you will indeed need to reinstall it, with procedure following grumpy_geek's links.

Just curious, why is it necessary to disconnect the drive? Is windows really that aggressive that it messes with drives it's not even directed to install.fabien85 wrote:If grub is currently installed on the Mint drive, and you take care of disconnecting that drive during the windows install, then grub will still be there and will still boot Mint....

Well in principle it's unnecessary, but I wouldnt trust windows, e.g. in the case where the Mint drive is the first in the boot order considered by the BIOS. And it avoids any mistake.Just curious, why is it necessary to disconnect the drive? Is windows really that aggressive that it messes with drives it's not even directed to install.
