I accidentally deleted my bottom panel[Somewhat solved with questions]

Post by rlslemmer »

I accidentally deleted my bottom panel. I've tried to create a panel to replace it, but it would be so much easier to restore the original. My efforts aren't proving to be very successful. Maybe at least to restart from scratch. Like where's the restore LM defaults button? :?:

Which MInt? 18.1?
Which Desktop? Cinnamon? Mate?

At this point I cannot even minimize a window and have a tab to restore it. Desktop is cinnamon.

I just tested in in virtualbox. Right click the desktop and select "desktop settings" Hit back arrow in top left corner. Find the "panel" icon and add a new panel from there.

Is there a way to restore Cinnamon defaults? Reinstall the Cinnamon desktop? Is there a way to like right click undo when I do stupid things like this?

Press Ctrl+Alt+t to open a terminal.
In the terminal enter

Code: Select all

cinnamon-settings panel
Then: "Add Panel"

Right click the panel on an empty place -> troubleshooting -> reset Cinnamon.

Right.
So: Press super-L (this opens the Cinnamon Debugger) click "Actions" (at the bottom right) and select to reset Cinnamon.

The program 'cinnamon-settings' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt install cinnamon
roger@roger-TravelMate-P245-M ~ $ sudo apt install cinnamon

This what I got when I did what you suggested. It turns out that the panels I tried to create after losing my bottom panel were from the Mate desktop. I thought I had Cinnamon before. I went ahead and followed the instruction above to install Cinnamon settings. Nothing has changed. I am guessing I need a restart for things to take effect. I am a newbie to everything Linux. So lost in this mess.

And after that, you can rightclick the new panel, choose 'troubleshoot' and then 'Restore all settings to default'.

New panels can also be added through the menu => Preferences => Panel.

You will be lost if you try to use a Cinnamon solution on the Mate desktop.
Run this command to check to see which Desktop you have.

Code: Select all

inxi -S
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI

What or where is super-L?

Desktop: MATE 1.14.1 Distro: Linux Mint 18 Sarah

So I must have Mate. So what I did before, installing Cinnamon settings is that going to mess me up even more?

Hopefully not... :?
Open a terminal, and run the command:

Code: Select all

mate-panel

This is what I get:

roger@roger-TravelMate-P245-M ~ $ mate-panel - - reset
Cannot register the panel shell: there is already one running.

Do I need to delete the panel I attempted to create?

You must be more precise in what you are doing. Example:
rlslemmer wrote:This is what I get:

roger@roger-TravelMate-P245-M ~ $ mate-panel -^-^reset
You inserted 2 spaces, which I replaced here for reference with the sign ^, which did not exist in the original advice. With such failures no terminal command can work as expected.
