4.4 kernal upgrade causes screen tearing

Post by lbunch »

Thinkpad T560 high res screen. Linux 17.3 fresh install. The base kernel was 3.19 which couldn't see the intel 8260 wifi radio. Upgrading the kernel to 4.4.0-72 which Jeremy suggested to another radio-less user with the same kernel and the 8260 card did fix the wifi. However, various motions of the cursor or the windows causes pretty bad screen tearing.
Question 1: do we know of an earlier kernel which fixes the 8260 wifi but doesn't rip the screen?
Question 2: Would upgrading to 18.x fix the screen and keep the wifi?
Question 3: any mint settings that would fix the screen?
Thanks,

Nobody will be able to help you without knowing about your system and it's hardware ! :?
(section 5 of the link in pink above)
Please use this terminal command, and copy/paste the complete output back here in a reply. (paste it inside the "code" tags) :)

Well, I don't have a great opinion of Intel + Cinnamon either, but I used to have 17 Cinnamon installed on a laptop with Interl video one generation older than Skylake. It didn't play HD video all that well but there wasn't any problem it running the DE itself. That said Xfce runs much faster so I clean reinstalled 17 Xfce.

It's not unusual for a kernel update beyond the standard one fort your release to fix something but break something else. But take a look at the 1st answer here:

@ lbunch

Please refer to the Wifi fix at ....... viewtopic.php?t=209496 , = no need to upgrade the Linux kernel.
