MediaTek MT7601U Driver/Firmware Broken in newers Kernels
Hi Friends,
I tried to compile this driver in all well known distros (Mint, Debian, Ubuntu and Manjaro), in all of them I've got "Makefile:288 recipe for target 'LINUX' failed.
I can't get MT7601u work in this newer version, so I have a lof of these adapters, I can't give up on them.
NOTICE: For Debian "firmware-ralink" and RT2800usb solution also is broken.
Thank you!

Re: MediaTek MT7601U Driver/Firmware Broken in newers Kernels
With the 4.4 kernel you shouldn't need to install or compile anything in the Linux Mint 18 or Ubuntu 16.04 but I think it has issues with power management
To disable, in terminal
Reboot
To disable, in terminal
Code: Select all
sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf

Hi, Thank you for Anwser, but still does not work.JeremyB wrote:With the 4.4 kernel you shouldn't need to install or compile anything in the Linux Mint 18 or Ubuntu 16.04 but I think it has issues with power management

sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
After reboot show scanned wireless networks, but after some time shows this error message:
Code: Select all
"(7) The access point /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/AccessPoint/7 was not in the scan list."
After some dmseg got this:
Code: Select all

Re: MediaTek MT7601U Driver/Firmware Broken in newers Kernels
It seems you have reported an issue at github with kuba-moo so I will wait to see if it gets resolved there
Re: MediaTek MT7601U Driver/Firmware Broken in newers Kernels
Thank you for follow my issue through GitHub, but his driver/firmware is for older Kernels 4.2 or older, and for 4.4+ still broken in all Distros. I've just tried Fedora, and also broken.JeremyB wrote:It seems you have reported an issue at github with kuba-moo so I will wait to see if it gets resolved there

VirtualBox?
You should use it in a bare metal installation.
I probably have the exact same chipset in a wireless dongle, in Linux Mint 18.1, on the bare metal:
Works fine. Out of the box. No compiling or tweaking required. Truly plug and play. Tested with kernel 4.4.x, 4.8.x and 4.10.x.

Already tried in bare metal, with Debian and Mint. Same results.Pjotr wrote:VirtualBox?

Re: MediaTek MT7601U Driver/Firmware Broken in newers Kernels
How many different computers have you tried with Linux and this wifi adapter? I see a lot of USB errors in those logs that could have a big impact on your results. We do see the Mediatek MT7601U from time to time and they usually work in LM18 and Ubuntu 16.04 after disabling wifi power management. Did you buy these from a reliable source? I have seen posts by users trying to get development models of wifi cards that are not supported by the manufacturers as the chips were to be destroyed rather than sold..the unsupported EEPROM reminds me of that

Actually was a cheap adapter, but I can't give up on them, theres a lot of them here.JeremyB wrote:How many different computers have you tried with Linux and this wifi adapter? I have tried on many computers, 32bit and 64bit.

It's weird then, that my USB dongle with this exact same wifi chipset (which I bought dirt-cheap in a Chinese web store) works instantly and flawlessly on all of my Mint machines.
Network Manager identifies it as
Network Manager identifies it as
MediaTek 802.11 n WLAN
(same as yours). And inxi identifies it as Ralink MT7601U
, again same as yours:
Code: Select all

Card-2: Ralink MT7601U Wireless Adapter driver: mt7601u

That version is the newest supported according to the eeprom.h file...about line 21 and it likely could be changed in the source code to include the 0d version
Code: Select all
#define MT7601U_EE_MAX_VER 0x0c
Re: MediaTek MT7601U Driver/Firmware Broken in newers Kernels
I hope the dev got this device to work on Linux Mint, the best linux betweet I've recently tested. Also best support.
Re: MediaTek MT7601U Driver/Firmware Broken in newers Kernels
The guy that has the github site using kuba-moo is Jakub Kicinski and if you look at the kernel source code for mt7601u you find
* Copyright (C) 2015 Jakub Kicinski
If I knew the chipset better or had one I would try what I think will work. I had no issues compiling the source code from github in either the 4.4 or 4.8 kernels I have.
When did you download the source code last as you said the error was Makefile:288 recipe for target LINUX failed and that would tell me there was an issue with the Makefile at line 288 but the Makefile doesn't have that many lines
