Post by DAMIEN1307 »

I installed the 4.10 kernel last Monday (had been using 4.08) and I haven't had Cinnamon crash since. Will see if this condition stays.

Yeah, it just crashed on me so 4.10 doesn't help. I wasn't even doing anything with the system at the time.

Are you on an upgraded install or a clean install?

I have had some weird desktop issues with Sonya as well.
This is on a upgraded version of LM Cinnamon (18.1 --> 18.2) on a stable old pre EFI machine with an AMD Cedar series 5450 1Gb Vram.
https://gist.github.com/anonymous/028d0 ... 920d356305

This all started just minutes after my initial upgrade to Sonya.
Window freezes when switching between accounts.
CNTRL + ALT + BKSPC does not function when window freezes occur.
Applets in panel won't respond.
Can only access panel Menu to access Session shutdown/restart via arrow keys/enter.

Seems possibly related to the MDM or Login system (LightDM "Slick Greeter" does not come with the basic upgrade, prefer MDM anyway).
After going into System Settings > Login Window and making some changes, things seemed to correct themselves.
Maybe MDM or Login Window prefs gets corrupted in the upgrading --> 18.2 upgrade process?
I made a couple temporary changes to Login Window Preferences Theme and Auto-Login Preferences...
Login_Theme.png
Auto-Login.png

The changes to these prefs seemed to correct the account switch --> desktop freeze issue.
So maybe just re-establishing the prefs for the Login Window and/or MDM cleaned up any corruption that occurred at upgrade?? Just guessing.

I later went back and disabled Auto Login and returned to my preferred HTML Login Window and everything seems back to normal now.

Someone else here wrote on this issue and said they also changed their account p/w and thought that had made a difference as well.
Kind of mysterious, but it's easy enough to try to see if this helps your situation.

I have a clean install of Sonya for some time now without any issues at all. All of a sudden, two days ago, Cinnamon started crashing, never happened before, it has happened about five times now. It enters Fallback mode.
A couple of times has it has occurred when I clicked on the menu button, another couple of times when I clicked on the update icon on the panel, and once when I clicked on the clock on the panel (to bring up the calender).
Also the update icon has started vanishing, it has happened when I have clicked on it and it just disappears so I go to the menu and open it from there and it restores the icon. Another occasion it just was not there when I logged in. This has coincided with the crashing behaviour.
Also once it crashed when I clicked on the 'show sidebars' button in Firefox.

Yes, same thing here.
Only has happened once but I have been seeing lots of reports here of Cinnamon crashing in 18.2.

Also, I should say that my problem with user accounts locking up windows and the systray (see above) has not yet been solved by simply re-establishing the Login Window config pref's as originally thought. These desktop lock ups seem intermittent, not always repeatable. But I just wonder if all these symptoms are related.

I should note for what it is worth: I did install the recent systemd update the other day that came in from the Ubuntu repo.

Any correlation?

hi catch22...no reason to ask moderators to remove solved...if you read the post i wrote when i marked it solved you would have read that "at least for me" the problem was solved and since i originated the post and indeed the problem was solved at least for me, you could have simply started your own thread on the matter...however although my system has not crashed once since i seem to have solved the problem on my own, out of deference for you and others who may have many more complications to your operating systems than i do and are looking for ways to solve your individual configurations for the problem, i have removed the SOLVED issue for you...enjoy...DAMIEN

Hi :)
if cinnamon crash.. look at syslog

Code: Select all

tail -f /var/log/syslog
like that

Code: Select all

Jul 11 21:27:35 ThinkPad-T61 kernel: [ 9639.972766] cinnamon[2941]: segfault at 7f573e7fffe8 ip 00007f5773d94305 sp 00007fff03a07c80 error 4 in libcjs.so.0.0.0[7f5773d6b000+c1000]
have crashes on my notebooks every day.
my notebooks most in standby or hibernation.

seems, if the system more than one day running, cinnamon crashes.

@Damien,

Sorry to hear that you're having such problems with 18.2 Cinnamon. I currently run that as my main OS on my laptop and it's been running fine.

What is your update policy in Update Manager? i.e. Levels that get updated.
