Kontact crashes

Hello,
After some patches Mint-KDE 18.2 works reasonably well on my laptop. I cannot folly migrate to it from 17.3 as long as Kontact/Korganizer crashes with a segmentation error when trying to do anything like customizing colors or creating a new activity/event. The backtrace was created trying the latter...

Issue 1: You are using a 32-bit Linux Mint system on a 64-bit computer. Install Linux Mint KDE 64-bit after you have backed up any important files.

FYI: On my older 32-bit computers I could not get Linux Mint KDE 18.x to run "Kontact" - "Korganizer" (PIM) and access my Google Contacts and Calendar options without it crashing, and some other KDE applications and utilities seemed quirky. As soon as I got a 64-bit computer, although still ancient and under-powered, all that worked. In Linux Mint KDE 17.x, everything worked perfectly with 32-bit or 64-bit systems, still does...

I also noticed that with either 32-bit or 64-bit Linux Mint KDE 18.x systems, that I had to start most applications twice, once for any preliminary setup or so they could setup their configuration folder, then exit them, then when they were restarted, they worked well from then on. I think it has something to do with increased security, or changed security and "permissions". Kmail was this way too, had to add emails accounts, but could not preview email until I restarted the application.

Issue 2: You are not using the correct video driver for your video card (NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS), see link below.

I installed Mint 18.2 64-bit and Kontact now works fine. I have in the meantime also installed the correct NVIDIA driver, but haven't re-booted the system. There is just one little "nag": The days of the month don't show completely, a small part of the number is cut off at the bottom. I wonder how I might be able to fix this...

Well, when trying to install NVIDIA-340, I also installed a couple of "suggested" packages, such as bumblebee. The result was that I couldn't get the system running. In the end, I could delete that package (as well as primus) in recovery mode. Now things work again, but, as you can see from the enclosed screen snapshot, the problem with cutting off the bottom of the day numbers in the month display of calendar still persists. I suppose there is nothing that I could set to amend the problem?
I am enclosing the latest inxi output. It shows that NVIDIA-340 is installed now.

The Nvidia driver does seem to be installed and working correctly.

Until your screenshot, I did not know which Calendar the dates were cut off from. I see that is the Kontact Calendar now, which could be just a font issue or "view" issue... I''ll check on that...

You are welcome...

It turned out to be a font problem with the default font. So, I went into Settings, Configure Korganizer, and switched the font to the "Arial" font, which I like, and it worked perfectly. Obviously, other fonts would probably work well too. The "Arial" font is part of the Microsoft Fonts available in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM). You can also download Arial from other font websites.

Hello again,
I installed all the M$-Fonts (including Arial - which by the way I have used myself and liked as well for a long time!) both into /usr/share/fonts and .fonts of my home directory. Also went into systems settings to make sure Arial is available both system-wide and "personally". I then went on to configure Korganizer exactly as you suggested.
Well, changing the font for the text of the month-view of calendar DOES change THAT text as it should. However, the day numbers ABOVE the text are still cut off at the bottom, exactly as with the font used before. Of course I did clear the font-cache, re-boot, restart Korganizer... It's somewhat frustrating...

I had the exact same problem as you did or do with the days being "cutoff" on the bottom in the Month View of Kontact (Korganizer) until I switched the font to Arial (I also reduced font size), just like my screenshot from before shows.

You can and should install the Microsoft Fonts through the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM). Why did you add the font manually, not sure that would work the same for this, retry using the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)"? And as I stated before, other fonts will probably work as well, but I have not tried others because Arial worked for me first time.

Some more googling produced that this issue was reported before. There is a bug 353240 (duplicate of: Bug 381635 - Broken layout: Month view does not follow font metrics), fixed in 5.5.40 and included in release 17.08. See https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=353240. I wonder how I could apply a temporary fix for the monthview component or else install 5.5.40? My korganizer version is 4:16.04.3-0ubuntu2~... at present.
