Sound Trouble and jack...

Post by bungleofsketches »

i have two issues with my sound and i don't know if there is a connection between the two...
i'm using a dell studio 1537 and linuxmint 6
not sure what sound card i have. i lshw commanded it but i couldn't find.

1) the volume only starts halfway up the bar (hence i think it can go twice as loud as its very quite at the moment)

2)the jacks are two haedphone and one microphone. the microphone i don't have so don't know if it works
one jack works but the speakers still pump out sound when the headphones are in.
when you plug in the other socket there's no sound out of anything.

i'm kind of an audiophile this is a big deal for me.
thanks.

You have to tell us more facts.
The minimum is exactly which Mint you have - which version and which edition (main or any of the CEs)
We also need to know a bit about all your hardware.
Run " lspci " in a terminal and post here (To copy from a terminal right click)
Some wifi and possibly built in sound can be connected to USB even if they are internal - if you suspect you have one of these run " lsusb " in a terminal.
Also tell us if this is using mint4win or not, quite important

I see you have ICH sound so let's start with the standard ICH solution - works almost always for lots of sound problems
http://www.linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopi ... sa#p107982
Of course you use model=dell

Sadly no no change... any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

Have to think about it
Sadly Intrepid introduced many problems with sound and Felicia is built on Intrepid
The ICH sound can't use pulse audio so you have to check that alsa is open - double click the volume applet next to the clock - you can find more options from preferences and the pull down menu
One more thing - to get the solution above you have to reboot - one of the few instances in Linux where that's necessary

thanks i couldn't find that before!!!

in that the 'front speakers' choice was scrolled down slightly that made a huge difference!!!

thanks. now the headphone sockets?

How simple it was - you put the headphone plug in and that switched off the speakers...
Now that sends a signal to the sound chip to tell it not to send sound to the speakers
I have no immediate solution, generally the alsa base solution takes care of this problem too
I think that model=something is important here
If it does not work with dell try auto or any brand - it's just to tell alsa what to look for
