This might apply for your hardware, but not for every.

The 4.8 upgrade was recommended for more than one problem. The first problem I encountered was reported across a wide range of notebook hardware of varying ages and brands. It appeared to be a regression half way through 4.4. Backtracking to an earlier Linux Mint would be complicated because all releases prior to 18.2 required multiple additional software sources to produce a stable system.

There is also the number of machines that have to have identical releases. Most of the machines work with most versions of LM but every prior version of LM has required some special treatment on some machines. LM 18.2 appears to be the first version working out of the box across all the machines and all plug in network devices.

The only problem not fixed in 18.2 is a sound settings problem.

I did the switch to LightDM and the GUI appears to be faster. Startup is faster. Really happy with 18.2. :D

That is what I found from the first day testing the beta version. Also auto-login works now reliable. So I conclude, that there is an issue either with mdm (since LM 18) or with the interaction of mdm and systemd.

Hi Cosmo, just to clarify - is LightDM auto-login configuration now available via the GUI (ie: a post release update). I held off from installing it when upgrading as decided to wait until 18.3.

Hi Mick - No, it looks like it will be released with 18.3.

Thanks MB. After reading the thread I'm thinking I might install it now anyway, looks like any creases have been identified/sorted.

To follow up on this, I've just installed and changed the lightdm conf file to allow auto-login (laptop has bios password). Anyway, worked perfectly and as per previous comments bootup is faster (3-4 seconds gain. Was 20 now 16). Interestingly shutdown is also quicker (down to 4-5 seconds as opposed to 8-9).

:)
