Sound not working from built in speakers in 18.2 (only via headphones or bluetooth)

I have a Lenovo Yoga Pro 2 and have been having problems with the sound from the internal laptop speakers. I think I initially had this problem when I installed 18.1, and don't remember how it was fixed. A couple of months ago I did an update and it broke. I ended up upgrading to 18.2 and it still didn't work. I've tried messing with alsamixer and PulseAudio Volume Control with no luck. At some point it seemed to have randomly fixed itself (only the left speaker) and a few weeks later just stopped working for no reason I could figure out. The sound currently works through my headphones and through my bluetooth speaker. I really want to fix this as the sound from my bluetooth speaker is really crackly and not that much fun to listen through. You can consider me a newbie but I can follow instructions and have used the terminal before. I wondered if perhaps the right device is not being recognised. I really hope someone can help, Thanks!

Hi,

Unfortunately I'm not posting a solution; but, to say I have almost exactly the same problem. I have one Linux distro or other installed on multiple machines and am fairly familiar with it both as a user and as a developer. But this has stumped me completely. Anyway, the machine having the problem is an old ThinkPad T410. I installed 17.3 on it and everything worked fine for a long time until, I think, after an update. All of a sudden I only had sound through the headphone jack, No system sounds, beeps or media audio through speakers at all. I tried everything I could find on forums, etc. Nothing worked.

Now, here's a key point. I grabbed an ISO of Mint 18 and burned a Live CD. Booted from it and...BOOM...all of a sudden speaker sound was back! So I upgraded hoping that would fix the problem. Maybe whatever earlier 17.3 update that had caused the problem would be overwritten. But, nope. The update went without a hitch. Every time I was asked if I wanted to keep an old file, config or otherwise, in favor of a new one I chose to overwrite the old file. But still, no speaker sound. Then, I upgraded from the new 18 to 18.2. Still no love.

I've tried alsamixer, pulseaudio, etc. suggestions (including re-installs) too numerous to list here. All the while apt-get update/upgrade-ing until I was blue in the face. I'm going nuts. So, I'm sorry for ranting. But I know this isn't hardware because of the whole booting to 18 Live CD working like a charm. There has to be a fix and I'm sure someone smarter than me knows a way to find it.

I'm glad it's not just me going crazy! although I'm sorry you've got this problem too. I was going to try booting from disk with an earlier version to see if the sound worked, but am having problems booting from CD at the moment. Sounds like it might just look like its working and then not when it's installed. I really hope someone can help us!

***** UPDATE *****
A couple of suggestions I've seen so far that I believe are unlikely in my case:

• 1. It's a hardware problem - I don't think so since the multitude of people I've seen with the problem, including Ecopix in this thread, are on different machines from different production years and different manufacturers. Besides, the problem completely disappears when I boot up with a Live CD.
  2. The audio chip is overheating - Once again, the problem goes away when I boot to a Live CD
  3. It's a kernel problem - The problem has persisted consistently through three kernel upgrades in both the 3.x and 4.x range so the chances seem slim
  4. It's a Mint version issue - Doesn't seem likely since it started with 17.3 after working fine for almost a year and continued with 18.1 and now with 18.2
  5. It's because of an update - Maybe since it started in 17.3 after working fine, as I said, for almost a year. But what update from 17.3 would hve survived the upgrade to 18.2? This one may be worth looking into.

Personally, I'm convinced it's software/config/settings or maybe driver?
