No sound in Wine since Mate 18.2

Post by MSt1982 »

Hello,
I never understand Linux' sound, Alsa, Pulseaudio....so I describe what I have done (and worked fine until my fresh install of Mint Mate 18.2):

I installed the Webupd8-PPA to get a normal sound (its a shame to me that Mint Mate has no built in Equalizer, but ok, thats another topic), and installed Wine.
Now I start my player through Wine, as ever - and hear nothing.

I could not remember If I've had to change its settings before, however, as I hear nothing I need to do it now for sure - but I cant. The programs settings show nothing - only 4 parts belong to my graphiccard hdmi-sound out (which I never use, I use onboard sound-out).
But there is nothing useful inside to select for onboard-sound. My 'Soundcard' or Equalizers LADSPA is missing.

It was very easy on every Mint-install before this...what happened/changed here? Always did the same - but now I am not able anymore to get sound!

It seems to me something in Wine must have been changed - but I am not completely sure. Fact is I have no sound anymore :( Right click on Soundsettings in my taskbar tells be that something called LADSPA is set for audio-out - but how to I set this in Wine - and get my Wine-app to recognize this - as before I installed Mint 18.2?

Wine its settings are on system-standard.

I already tried it with a program called Winetricks (definately not needed this before) and changed it to ALSA in hope this changes something) - and this seems to work halfway...with that setting I am able to select ALC887 - but without my equalizers' settings - so it sounds terrible.

How to get "normal" sound through the equalizers settings back again?

Which player are you running in Wine?
Note: Please remember that Wine is a hack, not a solution.
P.S. There are several players in Linux that can do the job.

Its Sidplay2/w.
And everything sounded fine before I installed Mint Mate 18.2. I definately do not change the player :) I need a solution and simply want to find out what is wrong now/different than before -
the player did not changed since years.

Did not tried it, its the first (and probably only) app I use through Wine - but I could imagine that this also affects other Wine-apps.

Hm Wine seems to be the same version as in 18.1...however, it does not work here atm as it should.

Any ideas? How to get Wine its sound-output to LADSPA / through the equalizer?

Just mentioning that Wine can work for some time, then something changes (version of Mint, etc.) and it won't work anymore.

I do sympathize. I have an old office suite called Microsoft Works. I've used it for years. But when I switched to Linux as my main OS, I looked into other Linux apps to do the same thing.

Question to ask yourself: Does that player do anything that a Linux app can't do?

Well, a couple of thoughts. I actually doubt that you'd need WIne to get system wide EQ. Searching " ubuntu system wide equalizer lapsda" gave me this ...

https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... ands-for-b

Also, do NOT be surprised if something stops working in WIne after a point release upgrade. WIne actually stinks. It's a ridiculous hack and most Windows software does not work with it at all. If it does work it often doesn't do it very well.

It's kinda funky.
I do all my audio thru wine and it has continued to work fine after updating to Mint 18.2
Notes:
- using wine2.0, tho earlier versions all worked too.
- NOT using pulseaudio, it's uninstalled.
- NOT using any EQ or LADSPA stuff.
- If necessary, I set foobar to "Default" audio output; audition to "default" audio I/O.
- winecfg audio is set to "(System default)".
I installed the Webupd8-PPA to get a normal sound (its a shame to me that Mint Mate has no built in Equalizer, but ok, thats another topic), and installed Wine.
Now I start my player through Wine, as ever - and hear nothing.
It sounds like you didn't test the wine/audio before installing the EQ?
It was very easy on every Mint-install before this...what happened/changed here? Always did the same - but now I am not able anymore to get sound!
So this same process and setup worked in earlier Mint versions?
Right click on Soundsettings in my taskbar tells be that something called LADSPA is set for audio-out - but how to I set this in Wine - and get my Wine-app to recognize this - as before I installed Mint 18.2?
Wine its settings are on system-standard.
Can you hear anything on the winecfg "Test audio"?
I already tried it with a program called Winetricks (definately not needed this before) and changed it to ALSA in hope this changes something) - and this seems to work halfway...with that setting I am able to select ALC887 - but without my equalizers' settings - so it sounds terrible.
You can get the audio thru wine if you set it to ALSA but the EQ requires pulseaudio, so no EQ and you don't like the sound w/o EQ?

There's some standard fixes you can try:

Code: Select all

rm -r ~/.puls*
dpkg-reconfigure <the alsa and pulseaudio and eq packages>
and perhaps a new "wine prefix". (save the old one!)

No I installed the EQ first

Yes

Its complete crap :D No bass, sounds like...complete crap, a tin can (and I have very expensive speakers) You ever compared it with EQ or to Windows without an Equalizer???

rm sounds like remove pulseaudio, but why? It seems to me that Alsa is the problem, if the Eq needs Pulseaudio!
Wine says 'used drive: Winealsa.drv' - how can I change this to Pulseaudio for a test?

I see...like many other things. Its a complete shame to Linux/ Wine and Mint (or PoL(!)) that the guys releasing this do not test it better before releasing...more and more problems every release...every time I hope updates/new versions possibly would fix some bugs any make the OS better - but every release brings new and more problems instead...very good

I've heard other people say the same thing, but my experience is that the audio response is flat and sounds great with no EQ, whether running thru wine or not. You can analyze the frequency response of the output with a loop back into the input: no problems there.
rm sounds like remove pulseaudio, but why?
"There's some standard fixes you can try:" It's a standard fix; removing a config file that often causes problems, and which gets recreated.

So you don't want to try that fix, or the alsa reconfigure or making a new wine prefix?
OK.

Trying to fix this again, it MUST be possible to get it work anyhow - it worked before I updated Os from 18.1...so I tried to change the entry in regedit from alsa to pulse.

I opened Winecfg and set Audio to Pulse.

Pressing Test plays a sound. So far so good.

But when I try to open my program, it does not open anymore, telling me "play settings not accepted by selected sound card, please try adjusting them".

Tried to open it through terminal, it told me something like "can't find pulseaudio" (i forgot - and cant reproduce. After that I removed Wine (sudo apt-get remove wine, sudo apt-get autoremove), reinstalled it (sudo apt-get install wine) - and when I now try to open the program from terminal nothing (!) happens. No error, no reaction, just nothing).

What is wrong with my Wine-install? Please help, I need Audio back!

Updating my OS was the worst mistake I could do

Edit:

I managed to reproduce the errors when starting the player through terminal by a restart:

Update:
If I run winecfg, it tells me winepulse.drv is in usage.

Test audio works,

I hear a sound.

Terminal says

What is going on here - why does my program not start and producing the errors in the above posting? I do not understand why the program does not start and producing these errors...

Edit:
Fixed the starting-problem by deleting the Drivers-element in Regedit completely - now the program starts. But still the problem from the beginning - its using Alsa - and not plays sound through the Equalizer as it should!
If I start it in the terminal, it now says

Code: Select all

err:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"winepulse.drv": libpulse.so.0: Kann die Shared-Object-Datei nicht öffnen: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
ALSA lib conf.c:3357:(snd_config_hooks_call) Cannot open shared library libasound_module_conf_pulse.so
ALSA lib pcm.c:2266:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
What is this for an error, what does it want to tell me? Or better: How to fix this?`Why does it fall back to Alsa and cannot start Pulseaudio/Winepulse.drv? What is the problem with this damn winepulse.drv?

And I still do not understand why it was fine in Mint 18.1 and not in 18.2 as both seems to use the same version of Wine as far as I know. And I could not remember that I did something different in 18.1...this really makes me crazy.

To me it looks as if the winepulse.drv is defect in any way / could not be startet correct. But why does Wine's test work fine? Does anyone know where that "Winepulse.drv" should be located?

After I found out that Mint 18.1 seems to use the same version of Wine as 18.2 and reading this, I think the problem seems not to be Wine, but something wrong or missing in the Pulseaudio-Install...but what? "libpulse.so.0"?
Which package does contain this libpulse.so? Is there something wrong maybe?

In my case, linux mint 18.2 64 bits the problem was the alsa 32 bit libraries were missing.
I solved it with :
apt-get install libpulse0:i386

Solved, now it works fine and as it should, many many thanks for the solution!!

But why is this missing?
Isn't it possible to re-integrate that into the next release of Mint to prevent such a problem?! It took about 3 months (!) now for me to "find" a solution....many thanks @the guys who made this

If you look at the installation instructions at WineHQ, they recommend installing all of the recommended packages instead of just the dependencies, which would probably prevent problems such as this by installing every possible wine-related package all at once, rather than just the minimum number of packages required to make wine work at all.
