My PC heats due to video
Bonjour,
I use Mint in VirtualBox. Video heats my PC. It is crazy. For example,if Youtube plays this video https://www.qwant.com/?q=chanson&t=vide ... 93986cd8be the four processors reach around 50% and more while if I launch the same video from host, Win7, the processor activity is only 25% and temperature keeps stable. So, with Linux Mint, the temperature dramatcaly increases and in 1 or 2 mn, it reachs 80°C.
This is due to VirtualBox? or to Linux Mint? Plugins? Codecs?
Do you have a little bit idea what happen? What can I do?
Regards,
Le Loup

Re: My PC heats due to video
Leloup,
Could you go in to terminal, type
I ran your video in question for its duration, and got the results in the screenshot below:
(the CPU usage was around 12% during playback, GPU peaked around 35C, CPU's stayed in the 30C's) [this video was presented and played in HD 1080 for the duration. Did you try playing it with a forced lower playback level-- ie; 720, 360?]
Unknown info besides inxi request above: desktop or laptop? Fans coming on or speeding up? I am offering assistance from a physical standpoint only, as I do not run VirtualBox on any of my machines.

Eric

Re: My PC heats due to video
Actually if you open that link, right click on the video, and hit "Stats for nerds" it says it's a 640 by 360 video using the VP9 codec.Leloup wrote:... while if I launch the same video from host, Win7, the processor activity is only 25% ...
I'd actually say that 25% CPU is quite high for that video.
As mentioned, post an inxi report.

Re: My PC heats due to video
Hoser Rob,
Here's what I get running the video: Its playing back at the selected 1080p option. I changed it to different playback resolutions while playing, and the nerdstat changes to what is selected. I believe you can only watch a maximum quality that matches that of what was uploaded. My i7-6700K was running 3%, and went to an average of 18% during playback. I checked with an Ultra4K-30Hz video, and CPU usage was all over the place between 18-47%. (I presume handling the higher volume buffer rate?)
Hopefully the OP reports back today with their info. Not sure why they would have the continuous thermal rise-- with consistent buffering it should have plateaued off. Something to do with running Mint in a VB session? I am not familiar with VB operation.

Same measures without video

The same video from host (Win7) without Linux Mint
Re: My PC heats due to video
Concerning stats: They seem be the same.
Re: My PC heats due to video
How do you do to reduce the video resolutions?

Re: My PC heats due to video
Leloup,
I see by your screen shot that you were running at the 640x360 as well. To manually change resolution while viewing a Youtube video, click the little gear icon and change the setting: Have you got a local video you could play back, testing on Windows and your VB as well?
My current understanding of the virtual world is pretty small, but I do believe the majority of your hardware drivers are "virtually" created, and this, I would think, could possibly lead to overhead processing losses. (anything virtual requiring GPU performance is not going to give you the maximum performance that you would get directly from your real GPU/driver.) Increase in CPU usage would be expected, as your virtual process is being created there. As for the continuous thermal rise you are experiencing, have you checked inside your PC for dust build up; what do you use for CPU cooling? Is this a new problem that didn't previously exist, or is it a recent VB install?

Re: My PC heats due to video
Bonjour,
Tests have been launched with Ubuntu V16 and Debian 8.7 like guest and this is the same. The PC heats due to video whatever the guest. Then, a new test has been done with an Octave computation instead of video reading. Results are the same. I remark that the host processor activities is twice as high as than the guest processor on, as you see below.

Re: My PC heats due to video
Hi Leloup,
To me, it looks like your host CPU and memory are fairly busy in your latest screenshot. The host relationship between CPU % of use and CPU temperature seem to correlate with each other, other than it seems to continue a small climb up to that level (around 80C) before plateauing off.
Is this a new configuration, or have you been running this way for some time? Also, for temperatures, have you checked for dirt/dust build-up. What are you running for CPU cooling, and does it sound like its working/speeding up with CPU temperature rise? If you are running a stock cooler, and this is a new software setup, you may want to consider installing a higher performance cooler for the CPU.
If you still find/believe the problem resides with the VB application after checking the above items, hopefully someone will chime in that has operating experience working with VB.
Regards,
Eric

Bonjour Eric,
Thank you for your help.
I dissembled my PC to make a check. I didn't see a lot of dust.
This issue has been posted here https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=85141, in forum of the VirtualBox site as you suggested.

Re: My PC heats due to video
You need to check the heat sink compound on your CPU?
Clean up old paste and apply new good quality heat sink compound paste.
Also consider buying custom CPU cooler for your CPU if you are using stock Intel cooler which sucks.

Re: My PC heats due to video
First, the virtual CPU is reduced to 2 and the 3D acceleration is enabled. The CPU temperature decreased by 10 ° C. So, the CPU temperature was 73 ° C instead of 83 ° C with the same fan speed (2750rpm) and the same video. The disadvantage is the poor video rendering. In other terms, the screen aspect is so bad.
Second, I tested separately the two proposed solutions either the enabled CPU number to 2 or the 3D acceleration. In the both cases, the temperature is higher.
Third, now, the VirtualBox release is upgraded to 5.2. plus extensions plus Guest Additions (GAs) in guest. The test results are the same. However, when the guest (linux mint) opening, I get a message that the acceleration has been modified due to driver missing and so the CPU temperature is going to increase.
I have not idea what driver is missing... Do you have a little idea what driver is missing?

Re: My PC heats due to video
Bonjour,
Cinnamon crashes with the last 64 bit driver 384 for NVIDIA graphic card.
I did:
# apt-get purge nvidia.
# apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg
# apt-get install --reinstall xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
# killall Xorg
Comments with the pictures.
1. Before driver re-installation, desk was: Initial desk with error message
2. After driver re-installation,
When I say Cinnamon crashes I mean that I get a message and a new desk.
The message is In English: Cinnamon crashed
Question in the message is: Do you want restart Cinnamon? I click NO.
The new desk is: This new desk looks beautiful.
Why not keep this new desk? How to do to suppress the error message "Cinnamon vient de planter"?
Regards,
Leloup

Re: My PC heats due to video
1. Temperature tests before driver re-installation:
PC heats due to a simple video
Temperature meets more of 80°C and the fan speed is more than 2600 rpm
2. Temperature tests after driver re-installation:
PC does not heat
In the same conditions, temperature meets only 65°C and the fan speed is less than 2200 rpm
The CPU activities is reduced. Why? While the GPU activities seems the same around 9% in both cases.
So, why not keep this new desk? I don't know its name. Can I suppress the error message?
Idea?
