[SOLVED] KBackup

Post by rtbcomp »

I've been looking for a simple backup tool to backup data files from my primary hard drive to a secondary hard drive (called "Drive 2 P 1"). I need to do a full backup occasionally with incremental backups in between. Looking at the description of KBackup it mentions incremental backups, but I cannot see how to do one, it always defaults to full backup.

The larger picture is that I use FreeFileSync on my Win 7 machine to copy files over the network to the primary hard drive on Linux and then want to backup those again to "Disk 1 P 1". The reason I do it this way is because I cannot get "Drive 2 P 1" to appear on the LAN.

I've also tried Cobian (a backup program I use on my Win 7 machine) running under Wine, but this too backs up all the files on an incremental. Does Linux access a file's archive flag?

I can't get FreeFileSync (For Linux) to install and the Windows version won't run under Wine.

Wasn't familiar with Kbackup so I did a bit of searching. Look at the dates/releases on these links ...

https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/application ... c/kbackup/

https://sourceforge.net/projects/kbackup/

... and it's listed as being supported up to Ubuntu 13.10. Which is pretty old. As the 2nd link shows, it hasn't been updated since 2013.

Since backwards compatibility does not work in Linux, I would consider that app useless.

Hi "rtbcomp",

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

"Kbackup" does not appear to be maintained and updated anymore.

"FreeFileSync" is superb and works well on any edition of Linux Mint. "LuckyBackup" works well too.

Linux Mint 17.x users can use their PPA

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:freefilesync/ffs

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install freefilesync

For Linux Mint 18.x

- Easy to install Linux deb files for 32-bit and 64-bit in the link below, just save somewhere and double click the file to install.
https://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/g ... eefilesync

- Newest version 64-bit only - Just download the archive file, right click it and select extract to create a "FreeFileSync" folder, and double click the "FreeFileSync" program executable file in that folder to run it. I would recommend moving the folder to your Home folder. If the "FreeFileSync" program does not come up when you double click it, you may have to right click it select properties, permissions tab, check allow to execute, click apply and ok. You can also create menu item or desktop shortcut to this program executable file.

Hope this helps ...

Many thanks guys, progress made! :D

First attempt at installing FreeFileSync didn't work:

Code: Select all

roger@Vista ~ $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:freefilesync/ffs
[sudo] password for roger:
'This PPA does not support xenial'
Cannot add PPA: ''This PPA does not support xenial''.
But this did:

For Linux Mint 18.x

- Easy to install Linux deb files for 32-bit and 64-bit in the link below, just save somewhere and double click the file to install.
https://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/g ... eefilesync

I haven't tried using it yet, but it started up ok and at least I'm on familiar ground again. I'll get back a bit later.

Hi "rtbcomp",

That's great you got FreeFileSync installed, it is a great program. You might consider trying "luckybackup" too from the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM).

Now that I have the results from your "inxi -Fxzd", I can tell you are using Linux Mint Cinnamon version 18.2 32-bit, but you should be using a Linux Mint 64-bit version for your processor...

The PPA is for Linux Mint 17.x based on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty, not Linux Mint 18.x based on Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial.

FYI: Their FreeFileSync archive file provides a newer version.

I'm well used to FreeFileSync under Windows, used for a few years. I tried Luckybackup (amongst others) but unistalled it, can't remember why though.

I noticed FreeFileSync said there was a later version available, does it install automatically (like under Windows) or just download the installation package?

I'll try the 64 bit version of Mint when I next have to re-install, at the moment I'm digitising my record collection and until that's finished it's case of "if it's not broke, don't fix it." Will I notice any difference using the 64 bit version? Any impications for installed packaged?

I also used FreeFileSync (FFS) for years under MS Windows and for years now under Linux Mint. I think LuckyBackup is excellent as well.

Some Linux software deb installation files will install a software source repository that will be updated regularly, others do not. I do not think FFS will do that as they do not currently have a repository for Linux Mint 18.x (Ubuntu 16.04 Xenial). The newer FFS from the archive file is only for 64-bit systems and maybe only for Linux Mint 18.x., and it too will require downloading a new archive file when a new version comes out and extracting it, etc... which is not hard to do once you have done it once. Just save all your FreeFileSync sync definitions (something.ffs) that you create into your Documents folder or home folder.

Everything will work better and faster using the 64-bit version of Linux Mint. All applications would have to be reinstalled using their 64-bit applications where available. FYI: Backup all important data, documents, multimedia files, passwords, etc... before re-installing Linux Mint 64-bit. All browsers have sync options to make that easy if you sync before re-installing.

How are you digitizing your music collection? There are great applications for that as well, and I think everyone here would recommend that you use the lossless ".flac" for the digital music file format which can then easily be converted into other formats like mp3 when and if needed.

Hope this helps ...

I started using NCH's "Golden Records Vinyl to CD Converter" under windows and it just about works under Wine, but I've just started using OcenAudio under Linux. NCH are a bit sneaky, they advertise some of their software as free, but it turns into a trial and you get a message saying it's expired. Very sneaky so they won't be getting any cash of me. They also put nags in the task scheduler. I'd sooner donate to a more open organisation.

I'm just using the soundcard incorporated on the motherboard, I don't need any great quality, the source is 1960's vinyl, 78s and home recorded cassettes. I'm recording as uncompressed WAVs which I may process further if I feel like it

All my data is on Disk 2 P 1 which will be physically disconnected before I do a new install. Data is also duplicated between my other two PCs on the network, an HDD connected to my router and Dropbox.

Re: KBackup

That went well :D

I used FreeFileSync to copy my data from the Win7 machine straight to "Disk 2 P1", this got around the problem of the 2nd HDD not appearing on the network. This has turned from a problem into a security feature

Always try to call a bug a feature, saves a lot of work!

Thanks again.

Hi "rtbcomp",

You are welcome, again.

FYI: There are some good posts in this forum on converting vinyl records into digital files, search for "vinyl". A lot of people use Audacity for this...

Re: [NOT-SOLVED] KBackup

Post by rtbcomp »

My euphoria was a bit premature :(

Using FreeFileSync set to mirror from the Win7 machine over the LAN to Disk 2 worked the first time, but the second time it deleted the previously saved backup! It showed the source as being empty, so it emptied the destination. Running it again with an empty destination worked OK

So I set FFS up on the Win7 machine to push data onto the primary HDD on Mint and it worked fine for the few times I tested it.

I then set FFS up on the Mint machine to backup from primary HDD to Disk2 and that worked fine, so the problem lies with FFS not recognising the source files over the LAN once it had already backed them up.

I tried installing the latest version of FFS on Mint, but it wouldn't have it, there was no response to clicking the program in the extracted folder***, despite the relevant box being ticked. I tried the link you gave me (with difficulty as I got a "not permitted" error on my browser) and also the link provided in FFS.

It looks like I'm stuck with a 2-stage operation for the moment, but still, I can call that a feature because my data is held in 2 places on the Mint machine instead of just one.

***EDIT - This may be due to having downloaded the 64 bit version and trying to run it on 32 bit Mint, it's getting late.

Re: [NOT-SOLVED] KBackup

Post by rtbcomp »

I've now loaded the 64 bit version of Mint and the 64 bit version of FreeFileSync (FFS) and it works but doesn't display the icon on the link, bit that's no great problem.

I still had a problem mirroring from Win7 over the LAN to Disk 2 - I think this may be something to do with the source addresses in the LH column of FFS. I loaded the 1st address by browsing, I then copied that to the clipboard and pasted to the other source addresses, then manually modified them as necessary. Those didn't work so I browsed again and the capital letters I entered were converted to lower case and it worked. I also had problems with permissions on the destination addresses.

I may investigate this later, but in the meantime I'm using the 2-stage process described above.
