Hello all,
I'm a complete newb to Linux, but here's the deal: I recently installed Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon on an old HP hdx16 laptop with the intent of hooking it up to my RCA HDTV via HDMI for use as a Netflix/Kodi media centre, which works pretty well for the most part, except whenever I close the laptop's lid, the external display resizes to a very high resolution and the video becomes unbearably choppy or freezes. It works fine if I leave the lid open since the resolution stays the same, but I would like to be able to close the lid. Is there a way to prevent the resolution from changing when the lid is closed?
System specs can be found here: https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c01634509
Thanks in advance.

Got it sorted out by not mirroring the display.
