Network interface changed from enp7s1 to enp8s1 ?

Post by pastic »

So, a couple of days ago I added a PCIe card to get an internal USB3.0 header. Today I notice that my Ethernet interface has changed from enp7s1 to enp8s1. Was this due to the PCIe card, or might something else be afoot in my computer?

Predictable Network Interface Names makes those funny names, so it is OK.

I thought that those names were supposed to be "predictable" and not change unless you moved the card in question to a different bus or slot. The change from p7 to p8 implies to me that the ethernet card changed to a new PCI bus. I would not expect simply adding a new PCI card to change the bus numbers.

pastic: to sastisfy my curiosity, would you be so kind as to run "lspci" in a console, and post the output? Thanks.

Here you go. Interestingly I find out that my new PCI card for USB3 also has a Firewire controller (the VIA drivers "belong" to the card)? Getting more and more strange.

Well, I'm even more confused. Your ethernet card is clearly on bus 8, slot 1, so enp8s1 makes sense, However, there is no bus 7. It looks like there is an old USB 3.0 interface on bus 2 (NEC) and your new VIA USB3 is on bus 5. The VIA Firewire is also on bus 8, along with the ethernet - I have no idea why the USB would get a different bus, or cause a change in in the bus numbering.
