Yes, it's the recommended way to do this. A complete reinstallation.

I am quite new to using mint (and have never used cinnamon) but it might be worth:

installing xfce (install the package xfce4 which will pull in all the necessary packages)

log out of cinnamon and log into xfce

remove cimmamon and install kde

As a first step I would make a copy of all your data.

Adding KDE is a matter of installing the package mint-meta-kde and everything 'kde'...
sudo apt-get install mint-meta-mate ^kde
Then log out and choose a Plasma Session before you log back in.

There's a hazard manually removing OS components, so don't do that straight away.

Mint plus another Mint will share some of the OS folders, like /usr/share/applications and ~/.config, so you might see Cinnamon tools in KDE and vice versa.

Moem's firm 'no' echoes the rationale behind having different Mint ISO for different desktops, they are not intended to share the same system, BUT the Knoppix distribution contains KDE and Gnome and LXDE and manages to switch between them. It's not impossible, just not fully automatic.

Be advised that Mint KDE will be discontinued in the future.
In continuation with what’s been done in the past, Linux Mint 18.3 will feature a KDE edition, but it will be the last release to do so.

As well as the knowledge that KDE specifically is known for not playing well with others.

Thanks to everyone for your kind replies.

For some reason, i wasn't being notified of posts, so I figured this one wasn't answered. FYI I did DL and install 18.2 KDE but had big problems with it right out of the box ... so it's now sitting unused in it's own partition.

The box 'notify me when a reply is posted' is checked; but I have never received replies to this one. Scratch my head...

The package grml-rescueboot allows you to use your installed Mint as the host for a Live Session ISO of something different. If you have a stable working Linux, it's a shame to meddle with it. When you boot a grml-rescueboot OS from GRUB, the host system is still accessible under the /isomount folder in the guest OS. I use it a lot from KDE 17.3 to see how the newer Mints behave on my machine. So far, any Mint18 seems to be equal-to-or-worse-than what I already have, so I am sticking with Plasma 4 and SysVinit and kernel 3.19 for another year.
