[SOLVED] Skype Installation (latest version)

Post by cozski »

Hello

I was informed by Skype that I had to update my installation version and went here: https://www.skype.com/en/download-skype ... -computer/

I downloaded the DEB file but on installation it tells me it's the wrong architecture. My PC is 32 bit. Where can I find an installation DEB package for 32 bit? I cant seem to find anything.

Thanks.

Ah, that doesn't sound to good! Thanks for letting me know. What would my options be in sticking with Linux and getting use of Skype?

Greetings from a Sunny Ireland (for a change).

hi cozski...i would wait for more replies just to see if someone else has better info then i have at this moment or maybe a work around...64 bit will not work on a 32 bit system...other then that, all i could say is that 32 bit is on its way out and 64 bit has been around now for about 10 or 12 yrs now, so it would be prudent to be saving euros for a 64 bit system...DAMIEN

What is your make and model of your computer? It may be 64-bit capable, but you have 32-bit Mint installed.

Can you post the results of this command from terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -C

Hi "cozski",

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

Skype is in the Linux Mint Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM), whether or not this Linux version is still working, I do not know.

There are other much more secure multi-media messaging applications that you and the people you communicate with can use other than Skype, like "qTox (Qtox)", "Wire" (developed by ex skype developers, 32-bit and 64-bit versions), Jitsi, Ring, Linphone, etc... There are many posts on this topic already in this forum.

+1 for posting the results of the console terminal command, I am amazed at how many people install a 32-bit Linux Mint even though their computer hardware is 64-bit.

+1 If your computer is truly a 32-bit computer, then you and all other 32-bit users should really consider getting another computer that is 64-bit. There is a major push to stop developing software for 32-bit computers going on right now (has been for over a year). You can get an okay older used 64-bit computer for $50us give or take a few dollars, make sure it has at least 2gb of system memory, more is better.

Hope this helps ...

The 32-bit version of ghetto-skype is still working fine. This was a wrap of web-skype before the official linux skype elektron client came out (which doesn't work on 32-bits). The maintainer was wondering if he should keep the project alive - if enough ppl tell him that his package is the last 32-bit linux client he might...

I see that you have 16 GB RAM and looked up the CPU which is 64-bit.

Because you have a 32-bit system installed, it can only access up to 4 GB RAM. The computer isn't being used to its full potential.

I would install the 64-bit version.

Hey, thanks... do you mean install 64 bit Linux or 64 bit Skype? Sorry if I sound a little daft... but appreciate the help.

Yes, the 64-bit Mate and on that you'll be running 'modern' 64-bit apps like 'Skype for Linux', Google's Chrome browser and other software that are only available for newer 64-bit hardware.
