Running in Software Rendering Mode

Downloaded and ran cinnamon 17.1 on new HP Pavilion laptop but got that "Running in..." message that is the thread subject. I have reviewed past threads concerning this problem but the answers suggest using sudo apt-get commands. But since my computer won't connect on-line, I cannot do that. Mate 18.2 does download and runs fine except the WiFi is very, very weak.Nearly nonexistant except when right next to the router. I have use an ethernet cable to connect to my satellite. I suspect the problems I have are connected with the Windows 10 loaded on the Hewlett Packard. Microsoft seems to be in cahoots with HP and sees any divergence from using Win 10 as violation of their proprietary equipment. Anyway, can anyone help/

Open the "Driver manager" from your menu. What are your options, and what are the current settings?

I wouldn't suspect any grand conspiracies, just basic common hardware support issues.

I'm not sure this helps but I tried booting cinnamon 17.1 using an ethernet cable connected to the computer. Instead of booting to the normal Mint screen with that "...Software Rendering..." error message, it booted to a login screen (with background pic) but my user-name password wouldn't work. Neither would the user-name "admin" and password "admin", nor just hitting the enter key with empty fields.

The Driver Manager is completely empty. An error message says "No proprietary drivers are in use".

Is it possible I downloaded a corrupted copy? I did download a copy of Cinnamon 18.1 and use that on an old Acer laptop I have. But that version is very complicated and again only connects when very close to the router.

I have an older copy of Cinnamon 17.1 on a older HP that had Windows 7 on it as well. I completely deleted the Windows OS. Cinnamon 17.1 runs fine on that computer and even connects to the router from another room. But the hardware is old. Sticky keys, etc.

There have been many complaints about Windows 10. Microsoft has used predatory business practice in the past. I have read they are making there platform unfriendly to other OSs. That is not "grand conspiracy". That is fact.

We are entering an era of either/or. Linux or Microsoft. Dual booting has become difficult. Maybe Ubuntu would still work?

Mint 17 was released in 2014, and probably does not support skylake graphics properly.

I see two option:

1. Install Mint 18.2

2. Perform extensive surgery on the kernel and graphics stack of your Mint install, with possible unpredictable results.

I recommend 1, but I'm willing to help you try 2 if you are game.

I'm going for option one.

I have tried Cinnamon 18.1 and also Mate 18.2. Both have a problem connecting to my Internet WiFi from any distance other than right next to the router. I can connect those versions with double the speeds using Ethernet cable, but then I have to sit right next to the router. Yet the Cinnamon 17.1 on my old laptop connects from my living room, no problem.

I would use Mate 18.2, and dual boot, if it connected better. Maybe I need to invest in a new router? I have Hughes satellite and the HT2000W router. Or maybe the router settings could be adjusted for Mate to be compatible?

Maybe downloading and running Cinnamon 18.2 will work. But again, Mate 18.2 will not connect from any distance other than right next to the router so I'm guesing Cinnamon 18.2 might have the same problem.

I also noticed both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies are turned on in the router. Could this be the reason for the poor connection issues? If not both then which frequency might be better/ I wonder if there are other settings in the router that might also be preventing the newer Linux versions from ccnnecting?

I sent customer service technical support an email about this problem. Their response in a
DONOTREPLY email was: Mr. Quinn, with regards to your request, please contact your Firmware support. They are the one who can help us with that. And who might that be and how do I contact them? I thought Hughes issued that router. The Hughes name is on it. That's called passing the buck and denying responsibility, or simply not doing your job.

I'll never understand why some peons think passing the buck is easier than just doing the task. They are expending more energy doing that than just doing their jobs.

Then last night somebody named corrosive said my firmware is up to date. But today his and about 5 other emails are gone. This is support?

Things like this are exactly the reason so many people a frustrated and unhappy with Hughes.

I spent pretty much the entire day trying to make the wifi work right. HUGE waste of time. Everybody and their brother seems to have THE answer. None of them worked. The only answers really are Hewlett Packard or Microsoft or Linux Mint, or any combination therof, suck. Mate 18.2 does connect but only if you're in the same room as the router. And yet on my old Hewlett Packard running Cinnamon 17.1 laptop, wifi connects from anywhere in the house.

This seems to be a very common problem. The only thing I've read that even comes close to answering the problem is this:

The wireless is basically unsupported at this time it is a Realtek RTL8723DE
Realtek might have the source code to Larry Finger in the next 3 months


That must be true for the RTL8723BE as well. NOTHING I tried, and that was lotsa stuff, worked. Try again in 3 months maybe.
