wow, the big scare
I just did the Mint update and it did not boot up the first time...I did a complete shudown, looks like all systems are normal

you have to be careful when updateing hal packages.
I have found you should always shutdown after updating hal and not reboot.
hal is normall a level 4 or 5 mintupdate, ie not all that safe all the time.
