Re: High RAM (1 GB) usage by Cinnamon
Hi yajan and Welcome to the Linux Mint Forums,
1 GB ram is about normal for Cinnamon - you can go to the control center and then to start up application and see if there are any programs started at boot that you don't really need and disable them.
If you are low on ram I would suggest that you install mate or xfce instead of cinnamon.
good luck.

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)
Press Enter.
Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Or fluxbox...just to brag on it, gnome-system-monitor says the fluxbox desktop is using 2.4 Meg - less than a terminal.kc1di wrote:If you are low on ram I would suggest that you install mate or xfce instead of cinnamon.

Re: High RAM (1 GB) usage by Cinnamon
My RAM usage here with a single web page open on Cinnamon is 2Gb. This is normal and would cause no problem whatsoever on your 4Gb system.

Open System Monitor. Under Processes, clk on the Memory header. If it's not there, enter preferences and put it there. You can then see how much memory is used by each process.
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....

After reset of Cinnamon, it reduced to around 300MB. Thanksgreerd wrote:If you notice that cinnamon's memory usage is higher than normal anAlt-F2 r

Well,PC hangs a lot. and i don't even have firefox open.MintBean wrote:My RAM usage here with a single web page open on Cinnamon is 2Gb. This is normal and would cause no problem whatsoever on your 4Gb system.
Surprisingly software works fine while running.
But, computer freezes while i try to open a software. Fro eg, When i Click 'Files' it takes 6-7 seconds to open that software, but after it has opened, there is no problem until computer is rebooted. Reboot computer and voila it freezes again for 6-7 seonds.
Re: High RAM (1 GB) usage by Cinnamon
Yes but it's not necessarily a RAM issue. Slow to open applications would have me looking towards the disc drive as a possible limiting factor.

Any Solutions?MintBean wrote:Yes but it's not necessarily a RAM issue. Slow to open applications would have me looking towards the disc drive as a possible limiting factor.
I highly doubt that my hardware is to be blamed.
Cuz, I also run Windows 7 in this device for gaming and stuffs, and everything runs smoothly.

Disable all visual effects in Cinnamon:

(item 7.1, right column)
And take a critical look at the applets and desklets that you've installed in your Cinnamon. They're the usual suspects.

You might be better off running MATE instead.

Re: High RAM (1 GB) usage by Cinnamon
First I would rule out the memory issue. See if you're actually hitting swap when the system slows.
